"On the Road: Celebrating 100 Years of the Lincoln Highway" uses rich visual resources – including vintage postcards, maps, and photographs – to document the formation and early days of the Lincoln Highway Association and the construction of the highway itself. The Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental highway in North America and originally covered approximately 3,400 miles from coast to coast. The route, consisting of both existing and newly-built roads, followed the most direct, scenic route possible from New York to San Francisco.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens is the venue for this special show of art created by older adults with memory loss and art students working in a variety of materials and media. The exhibit is based on the class created by U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design Associate Professor Anne Mondro. Partnering with the U-M Silver Club mild memory loss program club members, including the newer Elderberry (barely elder) group, students guided the members in art making. The theme of the semester was “Lessons Learned.” Students and club members shared experiences and expertise to create one-of-a-kind works of art. The final result is an art exhibition for the Club Members, care partners and students. This traveling exhibition captures the spirit of creativity and embraces a shared experience.

Join the University of Michigan Library and Open.Michigan for a community conversation that explores how copyright impacts our professional lives.

The keynote speaker at Copyright Camp 2013 will be Michael Carroll, Professor of Law and Director of the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property at American University's Washington College of Law and founding board member of Creative Commons. Carroll's talk will focus on “Sharing and Hoarding Research Data: Copyright, New Federal Funding Requirements and More.” In other words, "who owns research data and who cares?"

Carroll's talk will weave together a description of the copyright framework that applies automatically to research data as it is generated, compiled or visualized, new requirements likely to emerge from federal funding agencies in response to a new directive from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the role of informal expectations in scientific disciplines about annotating and sharing or hoarding research data.

Following Carroll's presentation, U-M community members will facilitate a series of breakout sessions to further examine data and copyright issues relevant to our institution. You are encouraged to bring your questions, experiences, and ideas to the discussion. Topics proposed for breakout sessions include: data control and access, emerging citation and attribution strategies and tools, data repositories, and emerging models that encourage secondary research uses of data.

Tangle is a huge, messy, fun, interactive elastic weaving event created live by children and their families. It’s part spectacular visual arts installation, part performance, part playground, part dance party and all chaos.

In a space like a giant pegboard, children and families create a landscape together, weaving elastic in many colors around tall slender golden poles. It is an organic and constantly evolving piece, vibrant and fueled by live music. Tangle is where children take control and create a giant abstract visually stunning artwork in public spaces, by stretching their bodies and their imaginations.

When songwriter Zach Williams met guitarist Brian Elmquist and vocalist Kanene Pipkin at Dizzy's Diner in Brooklyn for breakfast one morning in 2010, the trio decided to jam. "Three songs in," Williams recalls, "I decided I should quit what I'm going and just make music with these people." The trio’s self-titled debut disc is exuberant in its playing, welcoming in its attitude. Though the lyrics have a melancholic undercurrent, the tracks are more often rave-ups than ruminations, with swelling three-part harmonies and rousing group-sung choruses, especially on the electric guitar-driven “The One You Should’ve Let Go” and “Green Eyes and A Heart of Gold,” a we-will-survive anthem that could be about a family or a band. Indeed, there is a strong familial feel to The Lone Bellow, a recurring theme of inclusiveness.
