Lecture by Dick Costolo, Chief Executive Officer, Twitter
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo (BS '85) will discuss how he went from the trenches of Computer Science at U of M to leading a world changing company. He'll cover how Twitter thinks about communication and free expression in the modern world. Costolo will also take a look back at the evolution of communications throughout history and Twitter's role in the future of global communication and democratized information.
After earning a degree in computer science at the University of Michigan, Costolo declined offers of employment from technology companies and instead moved to Chicago to join Annoyance Theater, an improvisational comedy troupe. Eventually recalled to his major interest, he went on to start-up and then sell three technology companies, includintg FeedBurner, acquired by Google in 2007.
In 2009, what was originally going to be an interim position as COO of Twitter evolved into his taking the helm of the company in 2010. Under his leadership, the company has grown to 140 million users around the globe, tripled its employees and relocated to San Francisco.
