The Alchemy of Air: How Two German Chemists Fed the World and Fueled a World War
A seminar with author Thomas Hager
In the first half of the twentieth century humanity faced disaster as soil fertility declined and populations increased. Global starvation appeared inevitable. A call went out to the world's scientists to find a solution, and, in an unprecedented breakthrough, they did. The answer -- the reason we are now facing an epidemic of obesity rather than mass famine -- came from a pair of German chemists who figured out how to make bread out of air, built factories as large as small cities, saved billions of lives -- and whose work helped kill millions more.
