The keynote speaker at Copyright Camp 2013 will be Michael Carroll, Professor of Law and Director of the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property at American University's Washington College of Law and founding board member of Creative Commons. Carroll's talk will focus on “Sharing and Hoarding Research Data: Copyright, New Federal Funding Requirements and More.” In other words, "who owns research data and who cares?"

Carroll's talk will weave together a description of the copyright framework that applies automatically to research data as it is generated, compiled or visualized, new requirements likely to emerge from federal funding agencies in response to a new directive from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the role of informal expectations in scientific disciplines about annotating and sharing or hoarding research data.

Following Carroll's presentation, U-M community members will facilitate a series of breakout sessions to further examine data and copyright issues relevant to our institution. You are encouraged to bring your questions, experiences, and ideas to the discussion. Topics proposed for breakout sessions include: data control and access, emerging citation and attribution strategies and tools, data repositories, and emerging models that encourage secondary research uses of data.
