About the band
Rooted in country and blues styles, the world-famous Cowboy Junkies sound just like what the name suggests: you can identify the band that's playing the languid, darkly seductive music after hearing just a few notes. Often described as haunting, alluring and dreamy, Cowboy Junkies have long since secured their place in the annals pop rock history. Their lauded 1988 release, The Trinity Session, is the band's seminal album, a melancholic mixture of blues, country, folk, and rock featuring a collection of originals, covers and traditional songs. After the success of that unforgettable album, the Junkies gracefully built an impressive discography, and they've just finished a cycle of four albums completed over 18 months. The latest, "The Wilderness," sees the band taking the long view without losing their atmospheric bluesy sound. "These idle tales we need to keep us going, these tales are for our children," they sing. Writes Fred Thomas of
AllMusic: "Topics like parenthood and getting older come up more than late-twenties existential ennui, but are addressed with the same lost, wandering uncertainty that characterized the band's earlier work." Cowboy Junkies are, in short, a band whose value has transcended the excitement of youth. They were extraordinary then and they are equally extraordinary today. We are very proud to welcome them for The Ark's 2013 Fall Fundraiser.
