The goal of this conference is to rethink the threats to, and underpinnings of, national sovereignty. We plan to stimulate a lively discussion of how sovereignty has been conceptualized, and how various groups (national, regional, and ethnic) seek and establish sovereignty. Other topics include how domestic institutions underpin or threaten sovereignty (for example, how does federalism interact with local group demands?), and how regional powers and international organizations affect the sovereignty of nation-states (here, some examples include Taiwan-China, Ukraine-Russia, and the European Union.)

Conveners: Anna Grzymala-Busse, Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professor of European and Eurasian Studies, Professor of Political Science, Weiser Center for Europe & Eurasia/Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies Director; and Pauline Jones Luong, Professor of Political Science
