For decades jazz has played an integral part in Detroit’s musical scene. From the roaring twenties through the turn of the 21st century, this genre has continuously influenced the city’s evolving landscape.

After nearly a century of cultural influence, the University of Michigan Detroit Center invites you to find out how jazz still plays an active and impactful role in Detroit’s community.

On Thursday, August 27 from 6:30 – 8 p.m., the U-M Detroit Center is proud to present, “Detroit Jazz: Music Bridging a Community.” Open to the general public, this event includes complimentary admission, parking and light refreshments for all attendees. While not required, to assist us in providing the best guest experience possible, please RSVP for this event.

“Detroit Jazz” celebrates the rich history of the genre in Detroit and its positive effects on the community by offering attendees a unique educational and interactive experience. The event takes shape with a performance by "Dobbins, Finklestein and Armstrong,” a trio lead by the popular Detroit jazz percussionist and educator, Sean Dobbins, pianist Ian Finklestein and bassist Ralphe Armstrong. Following their performance, the trio will take part in a panel discussion moderated by 90.9 WRCJ radio personality, John Penney.

Through this event, audience members will be treated to first hand encounters and educational insights from the panelists on how jazz impacts society, its role in developing leaders, and will learn why Detroit continues to be at the forefront of this dynamic connection between music and community.
