Using palette knives and an intuitive response to her oil paints and surface, painter Sheryl Budnik first looks carefully at the land or sea, noticing her emotional response. She paints what she feels is the heart of a place, finding "the light within the darkness of nature”, or Lumen Naturae. This refers to Paracelsus’ Middle Ages idea that the light in nature allows inspiration and intuition to rise from the subconscious. Budnik evokes a memory of land or water with her abstract paintings in order to connect us with the spirit of the earth and leave us with an awareness that we are all nature.
