Oriol Sans, conductor
The UPO’s first concert of the year features pairs of composers. Berio’s effective orchestration of a piece by Boccherini, Respighi’s colorful elaboration of Renaissance lute music, and Britten’s incredibly inventive variations and fugue on Henry Purcell’s melody, which masterly features every section of the orchestra. Arvo Pärt’s stunning homage to Benjamin Britten will open the second half.
