This talk presents a synthesis of Robert Tittler's research on a neglected dimension of civil society and public culture in England between the Reformation and the Civil Wars. Focusing on the currency of paintings and portraits, Tittler considers the "strikingly spirited competition amongst an increasingly affluent segment of the population" that represented "a much wider involvement, in both geographic and social terms, in portraiture than has conventionally been recognized."
