The Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden
The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America blooms each spring with as many as 10,000 blossoms at peak. The peony garden began in 1922 with a donation by U-M alumnus W.E. Upjohn. Today the garden is undergoing a multi-year renovation project that includes new additions of heirloom varieties as well as Japanese, Chinese, and American tree peonies. Peony season runs Memorial Day through mid-June, depending on the weather. For regular updates of the bloom season visit the dedicated website that offers regular bloom updates during the season: http://peony.mbgna.umich.edu. Free admission.
