This two-concert series features U-M faculty and students performing seldom heard music by the Russian master Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev (1856-1915). A pianist for celebrated violinist Leopold Auer and a close friend of Tchaikovsky, Taneyev was the first student to receive gold medals in both performance (piano) and composition from the Moscow Conservatory. As head of composition at the conservatory, he was a major influence on such composers as Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Gliere, and Medtner. His style is highly contrapuntal, engaging, and adventurous.
