SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"How Did Hagar Become Black?\"
DESCRIPTION:Hagar is known as the wife of Abraham and the mother of Ishmael within Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam. While many biblical characters are depicted as Europeans within Western art\, literature\, and biblical interpretation\, some interpreters have reimagined Hagar as a Black woman. In this lecture\, Dr. Junior will discuss how and why Hagar has been appropriated as Black within some communities. This is a preview of her current book-length project Reimagining Hagar: Blackness and the Bible (forthcoming with Oxford University Press). Join us and follow the conversation at #ReHagar.\n\nDr. Nyasha Junior is an Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible in the Department of Religion at Temple University in Philadelphia. She holds a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Princeton Theological Seminary. She is the author of An Introduction to Womanist Biblical Interpretation (Westminster John Knox Press\, 2015).
