SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:On Miracles and Spacetime
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I argue for the existence of two coincidences—or ‘miracles’—in the foundations of general relativity\, which do not admit of explanation from within that theory. I suggest that these ‘miracles’ may be accounted for naturally in one particular successor theory to general relativity\, namely perturbative string theory. I close by reflecting on the nature of spacetime in general relativity versus string theory.
