ÆPEX Contemporary Performance and Kerrytown Concert House present Kathleen Kelly's new staging of the renowned chamber opera "As One" - music and concept by Laura Kaminsky and libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed.
Starring soprano Jennifer Cresswell and baritone Jonathan Lasch, this intimate production of "As One" is the first to bring the opera's depiction of a transgender individual's path to self-acceptance to the stage in Ann Arbor.
Hailed by The Los Angeles Times as, "a deeply human story", the opera is based on librettist and filmmaker Kimberly Reed's life, and features Reed's compelling, abstract film as the backdrop to its storytelling.
Following each night's performance, ÆPEX Contemporary Performance will lead a short talk-back session with the audience featuring composer Laura Kaminsky, on Friday April 6, as well as members of the production and informational literature created by trans librettist Aiden Feltkamp and the University of Michigan's Spectrum Center.
This production, including composer Laura Kaminsky's residency in Ann Arbor, is made possible through the support of the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, our regional regranting organization the Arts Council, the University of Michigan Spectrum Center, the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab and Career Center, and the University of Michigan Music Composition Department. Our other community partners include The Jim Toy Community Center, Aut Bar, and the University of Michigan Residential College.
