Saturday Sampler Tour | Highlights of the Kelsey Museum

A rectangular room with a bench in the center. The walls are painted with an elaborate scene of men and women from Ancient Rome. Some of the people are mythological creatures and gods like cupids (boys with wings), maenads (nude women), and satyrs (men and boys with horse ears). The god Dionysus reclines against a seated woman's legs in the center back of the room while the women, maenads, and satyrs prepare for an event. A rectangular room with a bench in the center. Getting ready to begin a new semester at the University of Michigan? Take a break to explore campus and visit the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology! Highlights of our collection include a Roman dining room from the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, the mummy coffin of Djehutymose, 4,000-year-old cuneiform tablets, and elegant Greek vases.

We will also take a look at our latest special exhibition, Urban Biographies. This exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy, Olynthos in Greece, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, are comparing their findings to projects of urban renewal in contemporary Detroit, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today?

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.
