In 1977, a team from the University of Michigan working at Carthage in Tunisia discovered 17 fragments of a marble statuette of Ganymede and the Eagle mixed in with kitchen debris in a cistern below an elite house, the House of the Greek Charioteers. As a young curator specializing in Roman art at the Kelsey Museum, Professor Gazda was given the task of publishing the statuette. In her article, which appeared in 1981 alongside the excavation reports, she dated the statuette to the late antique period based on its style, archaeological findspot, and cultural context in Carthage of the period of St. Augustine.

Although her conclusion was surprising at the time, since then, the Ganymede has appeared regularly in scholarship on late antique art. Then, in 2013, the statuette was stolen from the museum that U-M’s team had built at the archeological site and where the Ganymede had served as the centerpiece. Thanks to Interpol, the statuette was recovered in 2017. Now, after 40-plus years, Professor Gazda is working on another article in which she assesses the influence of the Carthage Ganymede on the field of late antique art history and presents an object biography of the changing meaning and value of the statuette from antiquity to the present day. Her talk will focus on her current research.

Kelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators, staff members, researchers, graduate students, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.

In this special program just for our younger visitors (ages 4–7), we’ll read a kid-friendly book and explore a related part of the Kelsey Museum’s galleries. This is a great way to discover the ancient world and connect our daily lives to families in the past. The program is a great first trip to the museum!

The book this month is *Cleo and Cornelius*. Adventurous Cleo and couch potato Cornelius live in ancient Egypt, where cats are worshiped like gods and goddesses. After Cornelius accidentally boards a boat departing on a voyage across the sea, the two felines find themselves in the faraway city of Rome, a place where dogs are treated like kings. In Rome, the activities never end! Cleo and Cornelius race chariots, play games, perform in a theater, and more. Do they even want to return to Egypt? A spin on Aesop’s classic fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse,” *Cleo and Cornelius* is teeming with hungry hippos, toga-clad dogs, and dancing cat mummies, bringing new excitement to a timeless tale.

Making Bread and Breaking Bread: A Workshop at Zingerman’s Bakehouse (April 14, 2024 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118792 118792-21841718@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 14, 2024 1:30pm

Join Amy Emberling (managing partner of Zingerman’s Bakehouse) and associated staff for a unique hands-on workshop focusing on bread-making, presented in connection with the Kelsey Museum’s latest “Crossroads of Culture” Object Spotlight.

In the ancient and medieval Middle East, North Africa, and Mediterranean region, bread was a staple food item for various cultures and religions. Yet despite its unifying qualities, the ways in which bread was made and used differed, from the unleavened bread of Jewish rituals to the decorative *prosphora* of Christian liturgy to the non-ritualistic stamped loaves consumed in Islamic lands.

This workshop will instruct attendees on how to make different types of bread with ties to the religions and themes highlighted in the current Crossroads of Culture display: German stollen, rum raisin turban challah, and matzah. Zingerman’s staff will also demonstrate bread-stamping and the preparation of decorated Uzbek bread.

*Space is limited to 12 attendees for this opportunity, which will take place at Zingerman’s Bakehouse at 3711 Plaza Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. The cost for Kelsey Museum members is $135; for nonmembers, the workshop is $160. Registration deadline: Monday, April 1, 2024.*
