Jane Evelyn Atwood is one of the world's leading photojournalists. Fascinated by people and concepts of exclusion, she has managed to penetrate worlds that most of us do not know, producing work that reflects her deep involvement with her subjects over time. In 1976, Atwood bought her first camera and began taking pictures of a group of street prostitutes in Paris. In her presentation, Atwood will speak about how she started and how she works, beginning with pictures from the prostitute series and including work from a story of the first person with AIDS in France to allow himself to be photographed for publication; a ten-year study of blind children; photos from Too Much Time (2000), her investigation of female incarceration in forty prisons and nine countries; and, finally, pictures from a four-year project on landmine survivors in Cambodia, Mozambique, Angola, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Reception, Friday, October 24th, 5:00pm - 7:00pm http://www.art-design.umich.edu/news/?p=1093&aud=e&menucat=ne

Google Earth on Campus: -
How scientists can benefit from this mainstream technology
Time:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location:
Biomedical Science Research Building

Type:
Conference/Symposium

The opening sessions of the Scientific Applications for Google Earth Conference. This is a meeting to bring together scientists from across the country and members of the Google community to explore how to use Google Earth and related technology to enable rich, new data interaction. No registration is required for the opening sessions, which are free and open to the public.

Google Earth, Google Maps and the KML programming language they share offer new ways of visualizing, communicating, and sharing data for scientists and policymakers as well as for hobbyists and novice users. The opening sessions will give an overview of the possibilities and share success stories. Speakers are:

--Thomas Zurbuchen, professor and director of the U-M College of Engineering's Center for Entrepreneurship

--Ryan Falor, systems engineer, Google Earth education and outreach

--Tim Killeen, assistant director for geosciences, National Science Foundation (NSF)

--Dan Atkins, Kellogg Professor of Community Information in the U-M School of Information, Associate Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure and former director of the NSF Office of Cyberinfrastructure

--Sean Askay, Google Earth outreach evangelist

--Michael Weiss-Malik, KML product manager, Google

--Trey Smith, systems scientist at Carnegie Mellon University West and NASA Ames Research Center's intelligent robotics group

Some researchers at Michigan are already making use of this technology. Perry Samson, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, has created www.tornadopaths.org. This mashup of data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Google Maps and Google Earth shows where tornados hit the United States each day. Samson has also put together several interactive air quality websites.

Conference organizers see applications in archeology, demographics, disease-tracking, climate change studies, urban planning and more fields.

Brewster Kahle, a leading proponent of open access to all knowledge, will consider the consequences of the consolidation of information into the hands of a few private organizations when he delivers the keynote lecture on "The Closing of Library Services... The Opening of Library Services." Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive and director of the Open Content Alliance, has been a vocal critic of proprietary services like the massive Google Books project, which recently scanned its one-millionth volume from the University of Michigan libraries. Following the presentation, a panel of experts will comment on Kahle's ideas and discuss the possibilities of "Library 2.0" -- the next generation of libraries, which will capitalize on all that the digital age has to offer to benefit patrons, including social networking, 24- hour services, and user-created content. Panelists will be John Seely Brown, U-M alumnus, visiting scholar at the University of Southern California, and independent co-chairman of the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation; Paul Courant, university librarian, dean of the U-M Library, and professor of information, public policy, and economics at U- M; Jessica Litman, professor of law and information at U-M; and Kahle.

Ta-You Wu Lecture - The Universe is a Strange Place
Time:
4:15 PM
Location:
East Hall
Room:
1324
Type:
Lecture/Discussion

Over the course of the twentieth century we have constructed a very successful fundamental theory of the behavior of matter. Viewed from this perspective, the world looks very different from our everyday reality. It is a very strange place, and a beautiful one--in particular, we've come to understand that the building blocks of matter appear as notes in a Music of the Void. Professor Wilczek will discuss this along with some recent discoveries indicating that the world is even stranger than we've understood so far, and how we're rising to the challenge.

Reception preceding at 3:30 p.m. in East Hall South Atrium.
