We invite you to browse panels about the scripts of ancient Egypt, indigenous languages of Central and South America, languages of Southeast Asia, and more &ndash; including the English language and language used in graffiti and comics.

This exhibit highlights the possibilities for exploration and discovery within the library&rsquo;s collections, which are impressive on many levels. The sheer number of materials, including more than 8.5 million volumes in locations all over campus, and access to millions of digital books, journals and images, makes it one of the largest university library systems in the United States. The collection encompasses ancient documents written on papyrus, electronic journals reporting on the latest advances in science and medicine, and materials from nearly every period, culture, and way of thought in between.

This is the first part of a two-part exhibition introducing exciting, recently acquired works from UMMA's collections gifted to the museum during the past five years. Recent Acquisitions: Curator's Choice, Part I presents a first look at artworks, mostly prints, drawings, and photographs by artists as diverse as Annie Leibovitz, Edward Steichen, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Carole McNamara, Senior Curator of Western Art, chose works that focus on some of the enduring and compelling themes that have occupied artists in Europe and America. One is the preoccupation with the human form as an expression of ideas, feelings, and sensations. This selection begins with the tradition of the academic nude study and progresses to embrace different genres, from both secular and religious contexts. Another selection-landscapes and cityscapes-are each opportunities for artists to speak to our relationship to the natural world-both in how we experience landscape as well as how we construct our own urban environments.

This exhibition is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery, the absence of a linear narrative, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second &quot;episodes,&quot; a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier H&eacute;l&egrave;ne Rochas stares down a mugger, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose, international network of artists, composers, and designers-&quot;led&quot; by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas, Nam June Paik, George Brecht, and Yoko Ono, among many others, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that &quot;anything can be art and anyone can do it.&quot; Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas, absurdist send-ups of consumer products, and invitations to direct, playful participation by the viewer, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.

This exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke, Dartmouth College Class of 1944, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. UMMA's installation is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Health System, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Arts at Michigan, and the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

Massachusetts-based singer, storyteller, author, playwright, educator, performing artist, and frequent NPR commentator Bill Harley inhabits a special world of wit and wisdom. You may have heard Bill as a storyteller in one of his family shows, which appeal to all ages. But he's also an impressive performer in adult shows, with a rare ability to weave story and song togehter. &quot; If Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes were to grow up, he'd be Bill Harley,&quot; raves Billboard. Bill is a two-time Grammy winner who, said Penguin Books of his stories and novels for kids, &quot;has the uncanny ability to reaffirm life for listeners&quot;&mdash;and that goes for listeners of all ages.

Leaders who fail to enact the preferences of their constituents risk defeat in elections. The risk seems to be real&mdash;legislators receive more votes when they adhere to district sentiments&mdash;but how citizens learn about the quality of the representation they receive is less clear. In a two-part study exploiting variations in state-level newspaper issue content as well as facts about legislative behavior in a randomized national survey experiment, we find that the information environment helps Americans re-elect officials who act in their interests. Specifically, across a dozen domestic and foreign policy issues, we observe double-digit changes in incumbent support when citizens encounter information about the roll-call behavior of their Senators or House members. The provision of legislative behavior information well helps citizens reward politicians who vote as they would have and punish those who do not. Our findings underscore the role the mass media plays in promoting political representation.
Dr. Barabas studies how citizens learn about policy issues from the mass media and interpersonal deliberation.

The Tartan Terrors are not a band but, in the words of the organizers, &quot;North America&rsquo;s premiere Celtic Event, features the best in music, comedy and dance.&quot; Amazed by the blistering chops of a two-time World Champion Bagpiper, the driving tones of drums from around the world, and a guitar played unlike any you&rsquo;ve ever heard, standing-room-only audiences come to understand why Dig This magazine declares the Terrors &quot;one act to keep an eye on!&rdquo; Combine all the music with championship-caliber Highland Dancers and internationally recognized comedic performers, and this Celtic Group goes beyond the ordinary. Members of the Tartan Terrors have performed on four different continents; in some of the most prestigious festivals, Highland Games, and theaters in North America, for President Bill Clinton and Queen Elizabeth II, and on Good Morning America. Experience the phenomenon of the Tartan Terrors and see why Celtic Beat hails them as &ldquo;the heirs apparent to the mayhem&rdquo;!

Peter Brantley discusses the wild and chaotic publishing environment of today, and why actions of publishers are rational, even as they threaten to destroy traditional models of library book lending. A few conjectures about library responses will be offered.

In an incredibly short period of time, control of the publishing industry has largely moved out of the hands of publishers. This organizational disruption has many precedents but occurs at a time of tremendous technological change, with content production and distribution shifting rapidly from physical to digital modes, with concomitant economic upheaval. Even the very conception of the &quot;book&quot; as a self-contained package, with an emphasis on a linear narrative, has been flipped inside out as new interactive applications bridge media types: books that are not quite books, movies, or games; books that know where I am, and can learn from my reading of them.

As publishers try to make strategic decisions in this maelstrom of change, historical relationships, such as those involving libraries, are trammeled by strategic re-prioritizations. Publishers fear the simultaneous commodification of complex authoring tools, the rise of self publishing systems, and the development of internet platforms by Apple, Amazon, and Google. And, in response, publishers attempt to seize control over pricing and distribution in as many digital sectors as possible. It's as if Toyota suddenly had to respond to home-3D printed family aerocars as a mainstream transportation.

Peter Brantley is the Director of the Bookserver Project at the Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based not-for-profit library, and is a Co-Founder of the Open Book Alliance, a coalition of librarians, legal scholars, authors, publishers, and technology companies. He was previously the Director of the Digital Library Federation, a non-profit association of research and national libraries.

Liza Fior was born in London where she continues to practice as founding partner of muff architecture/art. The work of the practice negotiates between the built and social fabric, public and private in projects that have mainly been focused in East London but not exclusively so. Projects range from urban design schemes to small-scale temporary interventions, landscapes and buildings &ndash; a continual dialogue between detail and strategy. The approach, value what's there, nurture the possible and define what's missing demonstrated in the project Making Space in Dalston is being further developed in a series of projects working around the fringe of London's Olympic site. muff were the authors of the British Pavilion in Venice at the Architecture Biennale 2010 which made the pavilion a platform for local concerns a piece of work which continues. Awards for muff projects include the 2008 European Prize for Public Space (a first for the UK) for a new 'town square' for Barking, East London and Landscape Institutes Presidents Medal 2012 for Making Space in Dalston. Co-author of, &quot; This is What We Do: a muff manual&quot; unsolicited research continues to be entwined into every project.

The Human Language Series is made up of three films. We will show the first two.

Film 1 - Discovering the Human Language: &ldquo;Colorless Green Ideas&rdquo;
Noam Chomsky asks, &ldquo; You meet somebody, say, at a bus stop, and you start having a conversation. How do you do it?&rdquo; How does anyone know what word to say next? Program one is about words, sentences, and something unique to our species: syntax.

Film 2 - Acquiring the Human Language: &ldquo;Playing the Language Game&rdquo;
Are children wrong when they say &ldquo;he drived&rdquo; and &ldquo;two gooses?&rdquo; How does anyone know what a word really means? Do we inherit grammar? Program two is about how children &ldquo;acquire&rdquo; language without seeming to be taught.

			<b>Website:</b> <a href='http://www.umma.umich.edu/view/exhibitions/2011-fluxus.php'>http://www.umma.umich.edu/view/exhibitions/2011-fluxus.php</a><br /> </p>

How in its emotional no less than institutional senses could settlement emerge in an early modern &lsquo;world on the move&rsquo;? The lecture explores the tensions between mobility and locality through the ways Sufi Islam responded to demands of settlement by preserving the migrant bodies of blessed men and the shrines, texts and rituals that surrounded them. Tracing how different Muslim communities located their sense of belonging, the lecture shows how religious resources were deployed to create new spaces of memory on Indian soil through the interplay of architecture and narrative as Afghan, Mughal and Hindustani Muslims constructed new homelands while remembering their distant places of origin.

The typical pattern of morphological evolution associated with the radiation of a group of related species is the emergence of a novel trait and its subsequent diversification. From butterfly eyespots and their various colorful rings to the diversity of shapes assumed by vertebrate teeth, seashells or horn beetles, this pattern of emergence-diversification holds for countless characters across most animal groups. Yet, the genetic mechanisms associated with these two evolutionary steps are poorly characterised. We have characterized some of the genetic changes underlying the evolution and the diversification of a wing pigmentation pattern in some Drosophila species. Our results show how a primitive spot of dark pigment on fly wings has first evolved from the assembly of a novel gene regulatory module whereby pigmentation genes fell under the regulation of a common transcriptional activator. The primitive wing spot pattern subsequently diversified through the sole changes in spatial distribution of this activator. These results suggest that the genetic changes underlying the emergence and the diversification of the wing pigmentation patterns are partitioned within genetic networks. More generally, this two-step model accounts at the gene regulatory level for the general pattern observed in animals and plants where morphological diversification mostly results from occasional novelties and infinite variations on these new themes.

Laura Wolf-Powers is an assistant professor in the graduate city and regional planning program at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches urban economics, economic development and community development. Her research focuses on metropolitan labor markets, job-centered economic development, workforce development, and the role of third sector organizations in urban politics and governance.

This lecture is part of PARG's Emerging Voices Lecture Series. P+ARG is comprised of research students in both Urban and Regional Planning and Architecture. Our main purpose is to enhance the social and academic experiences of research students in the college. We organize forums for sharing research across disciplines as well as casual social events. We also use the group as a platform from which to approach administrators and outside groups with our aspirations and concerns as a student body. Our most exciting project this year will be the extension of last year's successful &quot;Emerging Voices&quot; series of guest lectures into a day-long conference planned for March 2011. This conference will be interdisciplinary in nature, and is themed &quot; The Lean Years: Infrastructure, Dwelling and Sustenance,&quot; where we will convene local and visiting scholars to discuss the future challenges and interesting constraints facing those who shape the built environment.

The Labadie Collection is the world&rsquo;s largest publicly accessible research collection covering just about every 19th, 20th, and 21st century protest movement that can be documented on paper, from the French Revolution to Occupy Wall Street. It has served as a resource for thousands of people the world over, from high school students to seasoned researchers, from young activists in search of their roots to documentary filmmakers unearthing eye-catching images. Books, serials, manuscripts, pamphlets, photographs, audio recordings, posters, and political buttons are all part of this eclectic group of materials.

View selected items from the world&rsquo;s foremost archive of international radical social protest movements. &quot;Social protest movements often involve intense passion, so expect to see some edgy and offensive items on display,&quot; says Labadie Collection curator Julie Herrada.

The annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow, where thousands of people from Michigan, across the U.S., and Canada gather to celebrate and learn about Native American culture and traditions.

Forty years after a small group of Native American students and community members founded the annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow in Ann Arbor, it has evolved into a popular community-wide event hosted by the Native American Student Association at the University of Michigan.

Today, it is one of the largest university powwows in the nation; according to USA Today Travel, it is one of &ldquo;10 great places to be wowed by American Indian culture.&rdquo;

The 2012 Powwow will continue the tradition of providing a gathering place for Native Americans to celebrate and share their culture with one another, and for others who are interested in learning about our country&rsquo;s strong indigenous heritage. This year&rsquo;s Powwow will host over 150 dancers, 12 drums, and over 33 vendors/artists from across the nation and throughout Indian Country. In addition, there will be special celebrations to pay tribute to 40 strong years of powwowing for Mother Earth.

Over the past year, the Powwow Committee, composed mostly of Native American students and community members, have diligently worked, in collaboration with the University, to bring the Powwow a step closer to returning to the University of Michigan campus. This year, the Powwow will be held at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School as part of this transition.

Join us as we aim to cultivate a stronger Native community at the 40th Dance for Mother Earth Powwow March 17&amp;18.

Free parking at Pioneer. Free Shuttle service from the Union to Pioneer every 20mins.

The members of Visht&egrave;n come from two sister islands in Canada's Maritime region, Prince Edward Island and the Magdalen Islands. They grew up in communities with rich traditional musical cultures dating back two and half centuries, where the songs of the first French settlers blended with Scots and Irish fiddle styles. The group makes its mark everywhere they play, with their musicianship, communicative energy, and innovative approach to the distinctive music of their home region. All of Visht&egrave;n's youthful members are multi-instrumentalists, arrangers and composers, and their energetic rhythms (you have never heard the feet used as percussion in quite this way) have brought them very excited audiences all over Canada and in the U.S., France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Switzerland.
