The sense of community and compassion that sustains them is felt in their voices; it contrasts sharply with the nights and days of pain that are evident in the visual scenes, such as those of a woman being manhandled by guards and chained down to a slab in her cell. The title was taken from a statement by one of the film's narrators who recalled her first thoughts upon entering prison. As she looked ahead at her life sentence stretching out before her, she said: \"All I could see ahead was zeros. Time like zeros.\" Her comment is echoed in the camera movement that encircles the prison and the circles of razor wire that are seen whizzing by.
