SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reinventing Technology Assessment in the US: A 21st Century Model
DESCRIPTION:The ramifications of new technologies are rarely understood until they become entrenched\, channeling societal development down unhealthy paths and resulting in lost opportunities. Participatory technology assessment (pTA) enables everyday citizens\, otherwise minimally represented in the politics of science and technology\, to develop and express informed judgments. Their views complement those of experts and deepen the social and ethical analysis of technology.\n\nThe time is ripe to institutionalize a robust national technological assessment program incorporating both expert and participatory methods. Through the Internet\, it is now possible to organize such an endeavor on a distributed\, agile and open basis. A group of institutions has begun planning such a system: the Expert & Citizen Assessment of Science & Technology (ECAST) network. ECAST will be independent of the government\, not-for-profit\, and comprise a complementary set of nonpartisan policy research institutions\, universities and science museums spread across the United States.\n\nRichard Sclove is the founder of the Loka Institute\, a non-profit dedicated to making science and technology responsive to democratically decided priorities\, and co-founder of ECAST. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Fine Details: Samuel R. Delany's Hogg on Torture and the Social Order
DESCRIPTION:This talk considers a comment Samuel Delany made concerning the long 22-year period in which he couldn't get his novel Hogg (a pornographic novel that focuses heavily on violence\, sexual torture and rape\, including of children) published: Delany commented that censorship of a genre-set of art that depicts the suffering of human bodies is directly related to the practice of political torture. Scott discusses Delany's argument in relation to Mark Danner's 2009 comments about the public revelations of the Bush Administration torture. He links these comments to a discussion about torture and censorship that focuses on Delany's novel\, and on a 2009 New York Times report that Attorney General John Ashcroft insisted that George Tenet not tell him the \"fine details\" of the post-9/11 torture plans\, as well as Ashcroft's 2002/3 decision to cover up the naked breast of the \"Spirit of Justice\" statue at the Justice Department. This talk is part of the Lesbian\, Gay\, Queer Research Initiative (LGQRI) and is cosponsored by American Culture\, English Language and Literature\, and the MFA Program in Creative Writing.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bob Schneider
DESCRIPTION:Born in Ypsilanti\, raised in Munich\, Germany\, and based in Austin\, Bob Schneider is a rock-oriented singer-songwriter who pushes the limits. He's the son of a German opera singer who moonlighted in pop on the side\, and he's been performing since he was a toddler. He moved to El Paso to study art\, but the musical urge was stronger and he ended up in Austin. Bob fronted several of the city's most popular bands\, including Lonelyland\, the Scabs\, and the Ugly Americans\, and since then he's been burning up the grapevine in a very competitive town with his weekly Monday night shows at the Saxon Pub. His musical diverse tunes have been credited as a songwriting influence by Jason Mraz among others. Bob's latest album\, \"Lovely Creatures\,\" is his biggest and best yet\, and it brought him seven Austin Music Awards\, including Musician for the Year\, Song of the Year (for the top-15 national hit \"40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)\,\" Album of the Year\, Male Vocalist of the Year\, and Songwriter of the Year.
