This exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work of papyrologists: how they conserve scraps of often badly damaged papyri, decipher traces of ink, read and translate the resulting text, edit and interpret its contents, and make this available to both scholars and the general public. Modern technology, such as digitization and multi-spectral imaging, is aiding papyrologists in all of these efforts.

Texts on display are some of the highlights of the collection. They include a wonderful drawing of an elephant, a letter from a newly enlisted soldier to his mother, and, of course, some pages of the oldest manuscript with letters of St. Paul (one of the most famous texts of the collection).

In its 90-year history, the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection has trained more students and scholars in the field of papyrology than any other institution in North America. Founded by the visionary Francis W. Kelsey, the Papyrus Collection has been the training ground for papyrologists from around the world and home to many great resident scholars, such as Herbert and Louise Youtie, Ludwig Koenen, and Traianos Gagos, who died on April 26, 2010.

Papyrology is the field of scholarship that deciphers and studies the texts written –primarily on papyrus– by people living in the ancient Mediterranean world between 2,500 BCE and 1,000 CE. Most of these texts are found in Egypt where the climate is dry enough to preserve this fragile material. It is a highly specialized and technical field, requiring intensive training in language (Egyptian, ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic), history, and the unique set of skills necessary for reading original documents.

The exhibit is open during Audubon Room hours: Sun 1-7pm, Mon-Fri 8:30-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm.

This Exhibit is in Honor of Traianos Gagos (1960-2010).
Using topic modeling to automatically generate subject headings from huge digital collections sounds like a great idea...but does it really work in practice? Find out how topic modeling is being investigated for use in digital libraries.

Topic modeling is a new computer science algorithm that “learns” the relationships among items and then assigns topic (subject) headings accordingly. But how well does this work in practice?

We explored this question of usability, utility and value of topic modeling by conducting user studies of collections of digital books (HathiTrust) and images (History of Art, etc.) from UM and Yale. We first focused on measuring the coherence, meaning, and interpretability of learned topics, and from this developed a new method to score topic coherence. After building topics into user interfaces for books and images, and developing test scenarios, we launched a large-scale study (upwards of 700 users) to assess the value of these topics to end-users. The study was conducted using unmoderated user testing software, obviating the presence of anyone other than the user.

We will present preliminary results from that work, and will summarize potential opportunities–along with some known limitations–presented by topic modeling in digital libraries.

Zingerman's refreshments provided!",

A protean figure of the postwar avant-garde, Cage collaborated with Merce Cunningham and visual artists including Joseph Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, and Nam June Paik.

Exhibit celebration is Nov. 3, 5-7pm, in the gallery.
UMMA's rare and important collection of James McNeill Whistler works on paper represents one of the finest holdings of Whistler's graphic output in North America. This major exhibition features more than 100 works of art from UMMA's Whistler collection, which covers the artist's entire career in Europe, ranging from his student days and exposure to the vanguard artistic movements of the 19th century to the groundbreaking and atmospheric lithographs and etchings of his mature style. It is the first exhibition devoted to Whistler's works at UMMA since 1994.

Nearly all of the Whistler works came to the Museum through the bequest of Margaret Watson Parker, an early collector of both Whistler's prints as well as Japanese art. The exhibition explores Whistler's illustrious life and career; his artistic themes and concerns, including portraiture and his well-known series from England, Italy, and France; the interests and legacy of early-20th-century Whistler collector Margaret Watson Parker; and the tools and techniques that Whistler employed as a printmaker.
UMMA is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in a North American museum of Berlin- based artist Jakob Kolding. Kolding's work revolves around the experience of life in the contemporary built environment, particularly the relationships and contradictions that emerge between how architectural spaces are planned and how they are actively used. His collages, drawings, posters, and mixed-media sculptures incorporate a wide range of source material, sampling and mixing the visual idiom of modernist art and architecture, the language of sociological inquiry, and such popular cultural forms as hip-hop and electronic music, skateboarding, and soccer. Kolding's dynamic compositions encourage us to actively question the relationship between space and behavior, and to imagine forms of self-expression that use the built environment in creative new ways.",

The presentation integrates the science (theory and empirical work), ethics, and policy issues surrounding the six causes of amphibian decline/extinction. At the heart of the talk is a discussion of the theory surrounding the role of pathogens in decline vs. extinction and how our work on ranaviruses and the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium contributes to our understanding of when to expect decline as opposed to decline to extinction.
Designers who work with the subject of food are often called 'food designers'. According to Marije Vogelzang, food is already perfectly designed by nature. Instead, her designs focus around the verb 'to eat'. Vogelzang is inspired by the origin of food and the preparation, etiquette, history and culture around it. For this reason, she doesn't consider herself a 'food designer', but as the first 'eating designer' in The Netherlands.

Studio Marije Vogelzang has a wide-ranging practice, working on restaurant concepts, medical and educational projects as well as designing art installations and creating new food rituals.

Vogelzang gives inspirational, critically acclaimed lectures around the world about her work and vision. She tries to show the exploration and potential of a new approach on the act of eating.
Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories among blues, bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stomping fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but make their own tunes. The Steel Wheels fit among musicians like Langhorne Slim, Gillian Welch, or Adrienne Young and Little Sadie (with whom they've shared the stage) –- deft musicians making a name for themselves by creating their own particular permutations of traditional forms. Yet they also share much with new Americana favorites like the Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show, with charisma that causes toes to tap and energy to break out. The Steel Wheels count among their fans former Statler Brother Jimmy Fortune and indie folk favorites Over the Rhine, as well as Robin and Linda Williams, who sing harmony on the new Wheels' album, "Red Wing." The album's title track, a sweetly lyrical modification of the old-time tune of the same name, gives a good idea of what this band is about. The Steel Wheels did a great show at the Circus in May during their all-bicycle tour of Michigan, and they're an Americana band on a rapid rise.",
