"description":"This exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work of papyrologists: how they conserve scraps of often badly damaged papyri, decipher traces of ink, read and translate the resulting text, edit and interpret its contents, and make this available to both scholars and the general public. Modern technology, such as digitization and multi-spectral imaging, is aiding papyrologists in all of these efforts.\n\nTexts on display are some of the highlights of the collection. They include a wonderful drawing of an elephant, a letter from a newly enlisted soldier to his mother, and, of course, some pages of the oldest manuscript with letters of St. Paul (one of the most famous texts of the collection).\n\nIn its 90-year history, the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection has trained more students and scholars in the field of papyrology than any other institution in North America. Founded by the visionary Francis W. Kelsey, the Papyrus Collection has been the training ground for papyrologists from around the world and home to many great resident scholars, such as Herbert and Louise Youtie, Ludwig Koenen, and Traianos Gagos, who died on April 26, 2010.\n\nPapyrology is the field of scholarship that deciphers and studies the texts written \u2013primarily on papyrus\u2013 by people living in the ancient Mediterranean world between 2,500 BCE and 1,000 CE. Most of these texts are found in Egypt where the climate is dry enough to preserve this fragile material. It is a highly specialized and technical field, requiring intensive training in language (Egyptian, ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic), history, and the unique set of skills necessary for reading original documents.\n\nThe exhibit is open during Audubon Room hours: Sun 1-7pm, Mon-Fri 8:30-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm.\n\nThis Exhibit is in Honor of Traianos Gagos (1960-2010).",

"description":"UMMA's rare and important collection of James McNeill Whistler works on paper represents one of the finest holdings of Whistler's graphic output in North America. This major exhibition features more than 100 works of art from UMMA's Whistler collection, which covers the artist's entire career in Europe, ranging from his student days and exposure to the vanguard artistic movements of the 19th century to the groundbreaking and atmospheric lithographs and etchings of his mature style. It is the first exhibition devoted to Whistler's works at UMMA since 1994.\n\nNearly all of the Whistler works came to the Museum through the bequest of Margaret Watson Parker, an early collector of both Whistler's prints as well as Japanese art. The exhibition explores Whistler's illustrious life and career; his artistic themes and concerns, including portraiture and his well-known series from England, Italy, and France; the interests and legacy of early-20th-century Whistler collector Margaret Watson Parker; and the tools and techniques that Whistler employed as a printmaker.",

"description":"UMMA is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in a North American museum of Berlin- based artist Jakob Kolding. Kolding's work revolves around the experience of life in the contemporary built environment, particularly the relationships and contradictions that emerge between how architectural spaces are planned and how they are actively used. His collages, drawings, posters, and mixed-media sculptures incorporate a wide range of source material, sampling and mixing the visual idiom of modernist art and architecture, the language of sociological inquiry, and such popular cultural forms as hip-hop and electronic music, skateboarding, and soccer. Kolding's dynamic compositions encourage us to actively question the relationship between space and behavior, and to imagine forms of self-expression that use the built environment in creative new ways.",

"description":"In retrospect, the centrality of 'race' to the citizenship struggles of the post-Emancipation period seems commonsensical. Yet, historians of slavery, and of gender and sexuality, have revealed extensive evidence of interracial reproduction that belies the neat division of the population into 'black' and 'white.' While these complex and often disturbing stories of sex \"whether rooted in compulsion, coercion or consent\" usually remain divorced from political history, they beg the question of how racial meaning and identity was assigned and deployed in the citizenship debates that ensued after emancipation.\n\nThis talk is based on a project that seeks to reconnect the social history of interracial reproduction \"a not-so-secret history of sex\" with the political history of citizenship, in particular the debate over the racialization of citizenship after Emancipation.\n\nThe political paradox was embodied in the confrontation between those who sought to bifurcate the newly expanded political terrain by imposing explicitly racial divisions onto citizenship, and those who sought to eliminate race as an operative political category. The former were quick to highlight the dangers stemming from the \"miscegenation\" of the body politic, while stubbornly disavowing the obvious realities of sexual history. The latter, in an attempt to forge a political body freed of distinctions, called out the sexual history that had already foreclosed the fantasy of racial purity.\n\nAnn Holder is an Associate Professor of History at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where she was also the Coordinator of Pratt's Critical and Visual Studies Program. Holder received her Ph.D. in History from Boston College. She has been a fellow at the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University, where she also taught in the History and Literature Program. A social and cultural historian of the United States focusing on African American, urban, and gender and sexuality, studies, she is currently completing a book entitled MAKING THE BODY POLITIC: REMAKING RACE, SEX, AND CITIZENSHIP, 1863-1910.\n\nThis lecture is part of IRWG's Gender, Race and History program area. It is free and open to the public.",

"description":"The Wailin' Jennys are neither a reggae group nor an all-female Waylon Jennings tribute band. Three extraordinary voices, two founding singer-songwriters, one singular vision: The Wailin' Jennys continue to evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their individual talents five years after blowing in on a fresh acoustic breeze from Canada's midwestern heartland. Canadians Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody and New Yorker Heather Masse were all well-established talents individually, and their collaboration is an example of how exciting it can be when performers with distinct outlooks find ways of working together. Each member of the trio contributes distinctive original songs to the mix, which ranges from folk-rock to Celtic to traditional song. This trio has won fans for its incredible harmonies at venues ranging from \"A Prairie Home Companion\" (multiple times) to the small-town parks and festivals in Manitoba that gave them their start. Stop by and pick up a copy of the latest Jennys release, \"Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House,\" recorded in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.",
