SUMMARY:Exhibition:From Trace to Text: Highlights from the U-M Papyrus Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work of papyrologists: how they conserve scraps of often badly damaged papyri\, decipher traces of ink\, read and translate the resulting text\, edit and interpret its contents\, and make this available to both scholars and the general public. Modern technology\, such as digitization and multi-spectral imaging\, is aiding papyrologists in all of these efforts.\n\nTexts on display are some of the highlights of the collection. They include a wonderful drawing of an elephant\, a letter from a newly enlisted soldier to his mother\, and\, of course\, some pages of the oldest manuscript with letters of St. Paul (one of the most famous texts of the collection).\n\nIn its 90-year history\, the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection has trained more students and scholars in the field of papyrology than any other institution in North America. Founded by the visionary Francis W. Kelsey\, the Papyrus Collection has been the training ground for papyrologists from around the world and home to many great resident scholars\, such as Herbert and Louise Youtie\, Ludwig Koenen\, and Traianos Gagos\, who died on April 26\, 2010.\n\nPapyrology is the field of scholarship that deciphers and studies the texts written –primarily on papyrus– by people living in the ancient Mediterranean world between 2\,500 BCE and 1\,000 CE. Most of these texts are found in Egypt where the climate is dry enough to preserve this fragile material. It is a highly specialized and technical field\, requiring intensive training in language (Egyptian\, ancient Greek\, Latin\, Arabic)\, history\, and the unique set of skills necessary for reading original documents.\n\nThe exhibit is open during Audubon Room hours: Sun 1-7pm\, Mon-Fri 8:30-7pm\, Sat 10am-6pm.\n\nThis Exhibit is in Honor of Traianos Gagos (1960-2010).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lecture on the Weather
DESCRIPTION:This multi-media stage work by John Cage\, based on the texts of Henry David Thoreau\, brings together speech\, music\, film\, lighting\, and a weather soundscape to form a softly political piece as relevant today as the year it was written. \n\nCage (1912-1992) was well known as an experimental composer\, philosopher\, writer\, and visual artist. A protean figure of the postwar avant-garde\, Cage collaborated with Merce Cunningham and visual artists including Joseph Beuys\, Robert Rauschenberg\, and Nam June Paik.\n\nExhibit celebration is Nov. 3\, 5-7pm\, in the gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:On Beauty and the Everyday: The Prints of James McNeill Whistler
DESCRIPTION:UMMA's rare and important collection of James McNeill Whistler works on paper represents one of the finest holdings of Whistler's graphic output in North America. This major exhibition features more than 100 works of art from UMMA's Whistler collection\, which covers the artist's entire career in Europe\, ranging from his student days and exposure to the vanguard artistic movements of the 19th century to the groundbreaking and atmospheric lithographs and etchings of his mature style. It is the first exhibition devoted to Whistler's works at UMMA since 1994.\n\nNearly all of the Whistler works came to the Museum through the bequest of Margaret Watson Parker\, an early collector of both Whistler's prints as well as Japanese art. The exhibition explores Whistler's illustrious life and career\; his artistic themes and concerns\, including portraiture and his well-known series from England\, Italy\, and France\; the interests and legacy of early-20th-century Whistler collector Margaret Watson Parker\; and the tools and techniques that Whistler employed as a printmaker.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Open Access Publishing and Scholarly Values
DESCRIPTION:Why should scholars care about open access publishing? Dan Cohen explores the ways in which open access\, although associated with new media\, actually aligns well with traditional scholarly values. Cohen looks at a number of these values\, such as impartiality and the advancement of knowledge\, as well as the more self-centered values\, such as reputation.\n\nDan Cohen is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University and the Director of the Center for History and New Media. Dr. Cohen is the co-author of Digital History: A Guide to Gathering\, Preserving\, and Presenting the Past on the Web (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2005)\, author of Equations from God: Pure Mathematics and Victorian Faith (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2007)\, and has published articles and book chapters on the history of mathematics and religion\, the teaching of history\, and the future of history in a digital age in journals such as the Journal of American History\, the Chronicle of Higher Education\, and Rethinking History. He is the co-editor of Hacking the Academy and the author of Learning from the Blog: The Ivory Tower and the Open Web\, both forthcoming in 2012 from the University of Michigan Press. \n\nAt the Center for History and New Media Dr. Cohen has co-directed\, among other projects\, the September 11 Digital Archive and Echo\, and has developed software for scholars\, teachers\, and students\, including the popular Zotero research tool. Dan Cohen's Digital Humanities blog (http://www.dancohen.org/) is one of the most read in academia\, with thousands of subscribers–more subscribers than many academic journals–and an average of 10\,000 unique readers a month. Major posts on the blog have reached an even wider audience\; for instance\, Cohen's “Is Google Good for History?” was read by over 50\,000 people and received coverage ranging from Inside Higher Ed to Wired.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Out of the Ordinary: Selections from the Bohlen Wood Art and Fusfeld Folk Art Collections
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, which runs from September 11 through Spring of 2011\, allows visitors to explore two extraordinary collections of art–the Robert M. and Lillian Montalto Bohlen Collection of Wood Art and the Daniel and Harriet Fusfeld Folk Art Collection. The Bohlen collection presents an astonishing range of contemporary artworks fashioned from wood and includes works that explores traditional and non-traditional vessel forms as well as works that are more purely sculptural. The outstanding objects that make up the Fusfeld collection are both geographically and historically wide-ranging\, including work by early nineteenth-century itinerant folk portraitists as well as late twentieth-century sculpture and painting by “outsider” artists from the American South\, Midwest\, and Northeast.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Jakob Kolding
DESCRIPTION:UMMA is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in a North American museum of Berlin- based artist Jakob Kolding. Kolding's work revolves around the experience of life in the contemporary built environment\, particularly the relationships and contradictions that emerge between how architectural spaces are planned and how they are actively used. His collages\, drawings\, posters\, and mixed-media sculptures incorporate a wide range of source material\, sampling and mixing the visual idiom of modernist art and architecture\, the language of sociological inquiry\, and such popular cultural forms as hip-hop and electronic music\, skateboarding\, and soccer. Kolding's dynamic compositions encourage us to actively question the relationship between space and behavior\, and to imagine forms of self-expression that use the built environment in creative new ways.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conversations on Europe.
DESCRIPTION:Damien Geradin\, Professor of Competition Law and Economics\, Tilburg University\; and William W. Cook Global Law Professor\, University of Michigan Law School.\n\nIn recent years\, large US corporations\, such as Microsoft and Intel\,  have seen some of their commercial practices condemned by the Commission on the ground they were anti-competitive. They also faced fines running in the hundreds of millions of Euros. These decisions\, which may appear unnecessarily harsh\, have been met with concern by US commentators\, some of whom argued that the Commission uses competition law to achieve protectionist goals. Moreover\, many found the EU procedural framework inadequate as given insufficient attention to due process\, at least compared to the guarantees offered to defendants in US-style proceedings. This talk will discuss whether these criticisms are justified and to the extent they are what needs to be done to improve the EU competition law enforcement system.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Adaptations do not exist in a vacuum\; an adaptive trait must fit well not only with an organism's environment but also with other aspects of the phenotype. To understand the evolution of complex multivariate phenotypes\, we need to explore the patterns of covariation and interactions among traits\, known as phenotypic integration. My work considers integration across several levels of biological organization from both proximate and ultimate perspectives. Integration is often considered to be an evolutionary constraint\, but in this talk\, I will show that integration can also be viewed as a product of natural selection.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Presents: Matthew Ritchie
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Ritchie was born in London\, England in 1964\, and lives and works in New York. He received a BFA from Camberwell School of Art\, London\, and attended Boston University. His artistic mission has been no less ambitious than an attempt to represent the entire universe and the structures of knowledge and belief that we use to understand and visualize it. Ritchie's encyclopedic project (continually expanding and evolving like the universe itself) stems from his imagination\, and is catalogued in a conceptual chart replete with allusions drawn from Judaeo-Christian religion\, occult practices\, Gnostic traditions\, and scientific elements and principles. Ritchie's paintings\, installations\, and narrative threads delineate the universe's formation as well as the attempts and limits of human consciousness to comprehend its vastness. Ritchie's work deals explicitly with the idea of information being ”˜on the surface'\, and information is also the subject of his work. Although often described as a painter\, Ritchie creates works on paper\, prints\, light-box drawings\, floor-to-wall installations\, freestanding sculpture\, web sites\, and short stories which tie his sprawling works together into a narrative structure. Drawing is central to his work. He scans his drawings into the computer so that images can be blown up\, taken apart\, made smaller or three-dimensional\, re-shaped\, transformed into digital games\, or given to someone else to execute. One ongoing work that Ritchie calls an endless drawing contains everything he has drawn before. Ritchie's work has been shown in one-person exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art\; Contemporary Arts Museum\, Houston\; MASS MoCA\; SFMoMA\; and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Miami\, among others. His work was also exhibited at the Whitney Biennial (1997)\, Sydney Biennale (2002)\, and São Paulo Bienale (2004).

SUMMARY:Film Screening:The Heretics
DESCRIPTION:The Heretics reveals the inside story of Heresies\, a feminist art collective that was at the epicenter of the 1970s art world in lower Manhattan. Director Joan Braderman\, who joined the group in 1971 after moving to New York to become a filmmaker\, charts the collective's story for the first time in a feature-length film\, revealing its pivotal role in the \"second wave\" of the women's movement. Unlike more traditional documentaries\, the film is framed with striking digital motion graphics. Braderman combines intimate interviews with former collective members\, archival footage from the 1970s\, and documents of the collective to put the Heresies in the context of the larger second-wave movement\, which was made up of thousands who met in small\, private group settings to discuss issues and launch programs and actions relevant to women. The hundreds of Heresies members\, now scattered around the globe and working as artists\, writers\, architects\, painters\, filmmakers\, designers\, editors\, curators\, and teachers\, speak intimately about the extraordinary times they shared as they challenged the terms of gender and power and reimagined the lives of generations to come. \n\nThe screening is part of the IRWG conference \"Sexism in the Media: Why it Persists\, How Women Talk Back\"
