This exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work of papyrologists: how they conserve scraps of often badly damaged papyri, decipher traces of ink, read and translate the resulting text, edit and interpret its contents, and make this available to both scholars and the general public. Modern technology, such as digitization and multi-spectral imaging, is aiding papyrologists in all of these efforts.

Texts on display are some of the highlights of the collection. They include a wonderful drawing of an elephant, a letter from a newly enlisted soldier to his mother, and, of course, some pages of the oldest manuscript with letters of St. Paul (one of the most famous texts of the collection).

In its 90-year history, the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection has trained more students and scholars in the field of papyrology than any other institution in North America. Founded by the visionary Francis W. Kelsey, the Papyrus Collection has been the training ground for papyrologists from around the world and home to many great resident scholars, such as Herbert and Louise Youtie, Ludwig Koenen, and Traianos Gagos, who died on April 26, 2010.

Papyrology is the field of scholarship that deciphers and studies the texts written –primarily on papyrus– by people living in the ancient Mediterranean world between 2,500 BCE and 1,000 CE. Most of these texts are found in Egypt where the climate is dry enough to preserve this fragile material. It is a highly specialized and technical field, requiring intensive training in language (Egyptian, ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic), history, and the unique set of skills necessary for reading original documents.

The exhibit is open during Audubon Room hours: Sun 1-7pm, Mon-Fri 8:30-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm.

This Exhibit is in Honor of Traianos Gagos (1960-2010).
Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.

Dybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.

For Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.
Abstract: The availability of genome sequences for closely related microorganisms has at the same time clarified and complicated our view of species delineation. While 16S rRNA gene based classification generally corresponds to genomic and ecological differences, organisms grouped as one species often display both significant gene content variation as well as resource partitioning. In order to address the relationship between differences in gene content and sequence and ecological divergence in ecosystem context, I investigated links between genotype and ecology of two populations of Leptospirillum Group II bacteria in comprehensively characterized natural acidophilic biofilm communities. These populations share 99.7 percent 16S rRNA gene sequence identity and 95 percent average amino acid identity between their orthologs. One predominates during early colonization and the other typically proliferates in later successional stages, forming distinct tens to hundreds µm diameter patches. Absence of protein expression, measured via mass spectrometry-based community proteomics, of most population-specific gene content supports the argument that much of the laterally transferred gene pool found in closely related isolate genomes is of a transient, non-adaptive nature. Evolutionary signatures, and population-resolved expression patterns emphasize how sequence and expression variation of shared genes contributes to ecological divergence. As such, we highlight an interesting parallel to higher organisms, where evolution of gene expression has been suggested as an important factor in species differentiation. Ecological divergence between these two populations can be viewed as an example of r- vs. K-selection. The early colonizer proliferates optimally in the absence of competition from other organisms, thanks to adaptations that allow it to rapidly propagate in the AMD environment. Adaptations of the late colonizer allow its proliferation in conditions with high inter- and intra-specific competition for resources. Such distinct ecological strategies mediated by subtle genomic differences between closely related organisms, which are often found to co-exist in natural microbial systems, exemplify how fine-scale variation within ecological functional groups can have significant effects on community structure and functioning.",

Professor Grzymala-Busse will examine how churches influence politics, and why some have been so successful in framing policy debates and shaping policy outcomes. Familiar examples include abortion in Poland, stem cell research in Italy, and the teaching of evolution in the United States. In other countries, such as Croatia or Canada, churches have had much less impact on even the most sensitive areas of public policy. These differences persist even if we take into account levels of popular religious belief and practice, so that equally religious societies can produce very different public policy outcomes. In explaining these patterns, this talk will argue that the churches' historical role in establishing the nation led both to claims of moral authority and to the diffidence of contemporary political elites to the churches.",
