Modern technology, such as digitization and multi-spectral imaging, is aiding papyrologists in all of these efforts.\n\nTexts on display are some of the highlights of the collection. They include a wonderful drawing of an elephant, a letter from a newly enlisted soldier to his mother, and, of course, some pages of the oldest manuscript with letters of St. Paul (one of the most famous texts of the collection).\n\nIn its 90-year history, the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection has trained more students and scholars in the field of papyrology than any other institution in North America. Founded by the visionary Francis W. Kelsey, the Papyrus Collection has been the training ground for papyrologists from around the world and home to many great resident scholars, such as Herbert and Louise Youtie, Ludwig Koenen, and Traianos Gagos, who died on April 26, 2010.\n\nPapyrology is the field of scholarship that deciphers and studies the texts written \u2013primarily on papyrus\u2013 by people living in the ancient Mediterranean world between 2,500 BCE and 1,000 CE. Most of these texts are found in Egypt where the climate is dry enough to preserve this fragile material. Lori, PhD, CNM, FACNM is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan, School of Nursing where she directs the Office of Global Outreach and serves as Deputy Director of the WHO Collaborating Center. She received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Arizona in 2009. Her program of research focuses on community-based interventions to address the high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa as well as strategies to increase training and deployment of human resources for health. Her work is based on a human rights approach to reduce disparate outcomes in maternal child health. Carol J. Boyd directs the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan. She is also the Deborah J. Oakley Collegiate Professor of Nursing, Professor of Women's Studies, and Research Professor at the Substance Abuse Research Center. She received her doctorate in Nursing with an Anthropology cognate in 1987 from Wayne State University; her MSN in Psychiatric Nursing was also earned at Wayne State in 1982. Prof. Boyd's earlier research focused on women's abuse of heroin and crack cocaine, but her more recent studies focus on adolescent and young adult populations--especially their use of prescription drugs. She strongly supports global health initiatives and has worked in Poland, Canada, China, Ghana, and Liberia. This talk is part of the series Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Global Perspective.
