SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mai-Thu Perret: An Ideal for Living
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's multidisciplinary practice fuses feminist politics with classic modernist abstraction and utopian dreams. Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature\, design\, craft\, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art\, design\, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from \"The Crystal Frontier\"\, the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film\, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Simon Dybbroe Møller
DESCRIPTION:Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed\, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew\, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work\, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.\n\nDybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly\, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.\n\nFor Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum\, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:From Teasing to Torment: Improving School Climate for GLBT Students
DESCRIPTION:Gay\, Lesbian\, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (GLBT) youth are at increased risk of suicide\, mental health problems\, school failure\, substance abuse\, homelessness\, and bullying. A recent survey found that nearly 9 out of 10 GLBT students experienced harassment at school and nearly two-thirds felt unsafe. Social Workers are uniquely positioned to serve as allies and advocates\, helping to create safe schools for GLBT youth. In this session\, participants will become familiar with terminology associated with GLBT students\, and will learn how membership in one or more of these oppressed groups is associated with academic failure\, school withdrawal and other risk factors such as depression\, adult exploitation\, substance abuse and family alienation. Participants will become aware of micro and macro level strategies that can be employed with\, and on behalf of\, GLBT students to mitigate some of these factors.\n\nFee:\n\n$60.00\n\nTo register:\nhttp://www.ssw.umich.edu/programs/CE/registration/index.html \n\nThis program is approved for 3 social work continuing education contact hours.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Cellular efficiency in protein translation is an important fitness determinant in many organisms. It is commonly assumed that different synonymous codons are translated with different speeds and that translational efficiency is maximized by the exclusive use of rapidly translated codons. Unexpectedly\, we observe similar translational speeds among synonymous codons in yeast\, which we hypothesize to have resulted from codon usage in proportion to cognate tRNA concentrations\, the optimal strategy to maximize translational efficiency under tRNA shortage. This codon-tRNA balance is indeed observed from all eukaryotic genomes examined\, and its impact on translational efficiency is further validated in a yeast molecular experiment. Our study reveals a previously unsuspected mechanism by which unequal codon usage enhances translational efficiency\, and offers new strategies to improve synthetic biology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brenday Marshall: Dakota\, Or What's a Heaven For?
DESCRIPTION:In this brave and moving epic\, set in late nineteenth-century Dakota Territory\, Brenda K. Marshall opens a window onto the history of a place little known and often misunderstood\, to tell an original tale of desire and ambition. The lives and schemes of frontier politicians\, Northern Pacific Railroad executives\, bonanza farmers\, and homesteaders converge in the story of Frances Houghton Bingham\, who marries the son of a Red River Valley bonanza farmer in order to remain near her new husband?s sister. Seduced by the myths of opportunity driving the settlement of Dakota Territory\, Frances dares to dream of a new world in which to realize her unconventional desires. Providing a counterpoint to the dramatic risks taken by Frances is the generous voice of Kirsten Knudson\, the daughter of Norwegian homesteaders. As Kirsten grows from a voluble girl to a formidable woman\, her observations (equal parts absurdity and insight) reveal the heart of the novel. Vast and open\, like Dakota Territory itself\, Dakota\, Or What?s a Heaven For is about land--desired\, stolen\, purchased\, homesteaded\, loved\, lost. It is about the powerful and the powerless\, about boardroom deals and bedroom ultimatums\, and ultimately\, about the ever-shifting definitions of identity\, of home\, of grace. Brenda K. Marshall grew up on a farm in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. She is the author of Mavis (a novel\, Fawcett-Columbine\, 1996) and Teaching the Postmodern: Fiction and Theory (scholarship\, Routledge\, 1992). She teaches in the English Department at the University of Michigan\, and lives with her partner in the countryside near Ann Arbor\, Michigan. \n\nPlease visit www.brendamarshallauthor.com for more information about Marshall and Dakota\, Or What's a Heaven For.

SUMMARY:Performance:Red Sea Pedestrians
DESCRIPTION:The Red Sea Pedestrians are a musical melting pot\, bringing together six distinctive multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters to investigate klezmer music and a host of other styles.
