Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature, design, craft, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art, design, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from "The Crystal Frontier", the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.
Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.

Dybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.

For Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.
Mark Hallerberg, professor of public management and political economy. Hertie School of Governance. Sponsors: CES-EUC, Department of Political Science.
There are two plausible ways the EU can stabilize the finances of its member states over the longer term. The first is to take steps that complement market discipline of individual member states. For market discipline to play this positive role, three conditions need to be met: markets need to have accurate information on member state finances; market valuation of a given state also has to be an accurate valuation of the sustainability of that state’s finances; and populations need to interpret market discipline as a signal about their government’s competence and punish governments that face market pressure. Such a system is possible under the current Stability and Growth Pact, and indeed it appears that all three conditions held in summer 2009. Any bailout of a member state, however, undermines this type of system. As the Greek crisis has demonstrated, markets will then focus on the probability of a bailout, and populations will focus their blame on Europe rather than on domestic issues. More political integration would then be needed to prevent a state from getting into a situation where a bailout would be an option. The Brazilian model is then a precedent that the European Union could emulate. The steps required to go this route would require a new treaty, however, and it would be more desirable to reform the existing Stability and Growth Pact in ways that preserve market discipline. Current arrangements do not appear stable over the medium to long run.

Microorganisms have had (and continue to have) a profound influence on our planet, but only with recent advances in molecular tools has tracking the diversity and function of microbial communities become possible. Dr. Dick will highlight two projects which illustrate how we are applying community genomics to study the interplay between microbiology and geochemistry. First, he will describe their work in deep-sea hydrothermal vent plumes, which host dynamic interactions between microbial communities and geochemical processes. They are employing metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to address the following key questions: (1) What is the origin of plume microorganisms? (2) How does plume community structure and activity change across geochemical gradients? (3) Which hydrothermal inputs serve as the major energy sources for chemolithoautotrophy in plumes, and what are the implications for feedbacks onto biogeochemical functions? Second, Dr. Dick will introduce novel cyanobacterial mat communities inhabiting Great Lakes sinkholes. These cyanobacteria operate under low-oxygen conditions and are capable of both oxygenic and anoxygenic forms of photosynthesis. By addressing questions concerning the regulation of oxygenic vs. anoxygenic photosynthesis, competition between cyanobacteria and anoxygenic bacteria, and the molecular evolution of anoxygenic photosynthesis in the cyanobacteria, we aim to elucidate microbial processes that underpinned Earth’s oxygenation from the Great Oxidation Event (~2.4 billion years ago) through the Proterozoic.
What’s in a beat? Is it just the thump-thump-thump coming out of speakers? What about the everyday, almost mundane noise that surrounds us- the drip-drip-drip of a leaky faucet, the vrrooooom of a centrifuge or the pitter-patter of a student walking in an empty hallway?

With these questions in mind, F.O.K.U.S. presents “Shaping Sounds”, the first-ever beat battle at the University of Michigan to demonstrate the flexibility and cultural significance of sound. As an organization dedicated to art in all of its forms, F.O.K.U.S. is excited to venture down this ever-shifting alley that has a rich history steeped in collaboration and a DIY attitude. Beat battles began shortly after the birth of hip-hop, providing a Coliseum for DJ’s to scratch and spin against other DJ’s in hopes of winning local recognition. The idea was, if rappers can freestyle, why cant the DJ? Eventually, these battles evolved to involve beat-boxers and producers. The beauty of the battle is that anyone can enter, regardless of skill or fame. Some of hip-hop’s greats emerged onto the scene by starting at local battles like these.

While most hip-hop-centric events focus only on the sounds or the lyrics, Shaping Sounds focuses on the actual composition of the music and the context of the social climate to which it is delivered. Is commercial hip-hop only a product of consumer demand? And if so, does this say more about society as whole, regardless of demographic, than it does about hip-hop and the industry that produces it? These are the questions we will explore in addition to providing campus with an example of hip-hop that is inclusive, without bias, fun and free.
",
