Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature, design, craft, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art, design, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from "The Crystal Frontier", the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.
Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.

Dybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.

For Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.",

Deepening Meditation expands the capacity to be fully present in the moment-to-moment experience and toward greater insight into the recurring stories that keep us bound to the suffering of the mind. Though each section can be taken individually the two levels are designed to help develop and integrate skills for a more peaceful and healthy way of living. The eight weeks together offer practice strategies, the guidance of a trained teacher, and the support of fellow participants.
"The future looks turbulent for the 30 million people who depend on the Colorado River for their water," says Photographer John Trotter. Trotter will talk in the Library Gallery about "No Agua, No Vida: The Decline and Fall of the Colorado River and the American West." Trotter says, “For decades, so much has been taken from the Colorado that it has rarely made its ancient rendezvous with the Sea of Cortez. And this past October, Lake Mead, behind Hoover Dam, still the largest man-made reservoir in the Western Hemisphere, recorded its lowest level since being filled 75 years ago.”

This talk kicks off the opening of the photo exhibit "No Agua, No Vida: The Slow Death of the Colorado River Delta." Because this on-going project examines human impact on our environment, Trotter decided in 2008 that he would endeavor to leave the smallest possible footprint behind when working on it. He flies only when necessary, preferring to travel by bus or train. Once he has reached his area of study, he travels on a folding bicycle that pulls a small trailer full of gear. Trotter says, “Taking an automobile out of the equation of traversing the American West only shows how absolutely dependent the area has become on them. And I've found that slowing down to a more human(e) pace has allowed me to better see the details that make up the vastness.”

This talk is sponsored by the LSA Winter 2011 Water Theme Semester, the University Library, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and Latino/a Studies.",
