SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating 400 Years of the King James Bible
DESCRIPTION:The Bible exhibit is back! This exhibit traces the roots of the King James Version of the Bible\, showing both its direct ancestors and other\, related works up to its appearance in 1611. Attention is also given to the materials upon which the Biblical text was preserved\, from papyrus to parchment to paper. Original\, rare documents are on display.\n\nAll of the materials displayed in the exhibit are from the University of Michigan Library's Papyrus Collection and Special Collections Library.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Audubon Room hours:  Mon-Fri 8:30am-7pm\, Sat 10am-6pm\, Sun 1-7pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mai-Thu Perret: An Ideal for Living
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's multidisciplinary practice fuses feminist politics with classic modernist abstraction and utopian dreams. Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature\, design\, craft\, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art\, design\, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from \"The Crystal Frontier\"\, the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film\, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Simon Dybbroe MÃ¸ller
DESCRIPTION:Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe MÃ¸ller. Indeed\, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew\, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe MÃ¸ller's work\, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.\n\nDybbroe MÃ¸ller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly\, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.\n\nFor Dybbroe MÃ¸ller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum\, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IH Brown Bag: Come Back Africa (1959): From America to Africa and Back Again 
DESCRIPTION:Modisane’s paper explores one of the icons of South African cinema\, Come Back\, Africa (1959)\, by American independent filmmaker Lionel Rogosin\, made in collaboration with Sophiatown intellectuals Lewis Nkosi\, Bloke Modisane\, and Can Themba. The film was produced surreptitiously\, during the Apartheid days of repression\, and mostly circulated abroad. Critical to its power of dialogue and representation of conditions of black South Africans was the partnership internal to its creation\, which crossed the “color line” and gave cinematic content perspicuity\, liveliness\, forthright dialogue\, and sense of place. The film\, a slice of black urban life in 1950s Sophiatown and greater Johannesburg\, is among the few produced at a moment of censorship and lack of resources\, which is crucial to its becoming an icon of the times and resonating with civil rights in America. Modisane’s paper documents the public reception of this film in America and elsewhere\, paying particular attention to its circumstances of non-circulation or erratic circulation. This paper is one chapter of the book Modisane has completed while a University of Michigan Presidential Scholar\, on leave from a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Cape Town.\n

DESCRIPTION:What if you lived by the largest body of fresh water in the world but could no longer afford to use it?  With a shrinking population\, the post-industrial city of Highland Park\, Michigan is on the verge of financial collapse. The state of Michigan has appointed an Emergency Financial Manager who sees the water plant as key to economic recovery. She has raised water rates and has implemented severe measures to collect on bills. As a result\, Highland Park residents have received water bills as high as $10\,000\, they have had their water turned off\, their homes foreclosed\, and are struggling to keep water\, a basic human right\, from becoming privatized.\nThe Water Front is the story of an American city in crisis but it is not just about water. The story touches on the very essence of our democratic system and is an unnerving indication of what is in store for residents around the world facing their own water struggles. The film raises questions such as: Who determines the future of shared public resources? What are alternatives to water privatization? SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lecture: Tim Love\, Northeastern University/Utile\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Timothy Love (M.Arch.\, AIA\, CNU\, LEED AP) is a tenured associate professor at the Northeastern University School of Architecture where he teaches the undergraduate housing studio and the master’s degree research studio focused on market-driven building types. Love teaches a seminar that examines the theoretical underpinnings of modern architecture in the context of the preoccupations of contemporary practice.\n\nLove is also the founding principal of Utile\, an architecture and planning firm that specializes in the unique regulatory\, political\, and design challenges of complex urban projects. The firm is committed to the revitalization of the American city through proactive planning that bridges public and private jurisdictional boundaries. Private land\, whether held by for-profit real estate developers or non-profit institutions such as museums\, hospitals\, and universities\, make up the majority of civic space opportunities in our cities. Design speculation is the primary vehicle for discovering opportunities that both encourage private investment and benefit the public realm.\n\nArea of Research: \nLove's research focuses on what he calls the \"schizophrenia of contemporary architectural practice\,\" the result of a division between two kinds of architectural production. One is supported by institutions and patrons\, and the other serves the pragmatic commercial marketplace. In Love's view\, there is an overemphasis on patronage architecture in academic discourse and correspondingly little theoretical interest in the building types and design processes of the market-driven economy\, despite the fact that these buildings make up the vast majority of the built environment. In his practice (Utile\, Inc.) and in his writing (\"Double-Loaded\"\, \"A Minor Theory of Architecture\"\, and other works)\, Love has demonstrated a critical need to focus on the broader cultural and societal context of market-driven building types and their aggregation into new urban districts.

DESCRIPTION:This Tuesday (2/1/11)\, Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority\, Inc. will be collaborating with the Spectrum Center to present a unique Black History Month and Valentine's Day program\, entitled \"A Minority Within a Minority: Exploring Queer Love in the Black Community.\" This discussion-based program will explore the way in which non-heterosexuals of color--specifically within the Black community--are represented in a society which seems to exclude their unique intersectional experience\, and often equates homosexuality to whiteness. At the end of this discussion\, we will think of concrete ways of incorporating the queer black experience into a mostly white heteronormative mainstream culture\, while also thinking of ways to make love a universal experience\, regardless of race or sexual orientation.

DESCRIPTION:Theatrical combat is a multidisciplinary art that combines acting with elements of  fencing\, martial arts\, dance\, and music to develop a safe and effective  performance. It is a distinct area of study\; essentially a marital art where the focus  is not to injure your partner. As with any martial art\, years of training are needed  before an individual is prepared to safely share their skills on the stage.\n\nThe Ring of Steel offers theatrical combat training in a wide range of weapons and  combat styles\, based in large part on Aikido and late period rapier.
