SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lesbian/Queer Historiography Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The symposium will highlight the range of methodological approaches currently being devised for writing the history of same-sex love and desire in periods before the emergence of a widely-perceived\, distinct homosexual identity. Experts will cross historical periods in an effort to think comparatively about the methodological issues involved in writing a non-identitarian history of sexuality. Each of the participants has contributed significantly to the history of sexuality in previous work\, and is currently embarked on a project that reformulates central principles of the field.\n\nThe symposium will consider as well why the writing of lesbian history\, in contrast to gay male and transsexual history\, remains primarily the endeavor of scholars trained in literary studies. The day will consist of three 50-minute public lectures\, each followed by a response\, Q&A\, as well as a working lunch and a final roundtable.\n\nEach of the three featured speakers is in the process of finishing a monograph on the history of sexuality. Professor Doan’s book\, Disturbing Practices: History\, Sexuality\, and Women's Experience of Modern War\, 1914-18\, is forthcoming from University of Chicago Press. Partly dedicated to examining the utility of the concept of genealogy for queer history and partly dedicated to historical case studies\, this book examines the lives of women who did not identify as lesbian despite the presence of a cultural discourse on homosexuality. A chapter from the book\, \"Topsy-Turveydom\,\" was published in GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies.\n\nProfessor Lanser's monograph\, Mapping Sapphic Modernity\, 1600-1800\, is a major rethinking of the history of western European lesbianism over the long eighteenth-century. A comparativist\, Lanser charts differences among English\, French\, and German discourses of Sapphic desire\, arguing that sapphic subjects function as a signifier of modernity and national identity. Aiming to \"flip the scholarly coin from the history of sexuality to the sexuality of history: from the premise that sexuality is historically constructed to the claim that history is also sexually constructed\,\" Lanser has published essays from this project in such venues as Textual Practice and Journal of the History of Sexuality.\n\nValerie Traub’s current project\, Making Sexual Knowledge: Thinking Sex with the Early Moderns\, is an outgrowth of The Renaissance of Lesbianism in Early Modern England\, which won the Best Book award from the Society of Early Modern Women in 2002. Poised at the intersection of historical and literary studies\, it explores the methods by which we come to \"know\" the history of sexuality\, including definitions of what sex is. With chapters ranging from sexual pedagogy to the sexuality of Shakespeare\, from popular films to women’s sexual knowledge in Renaissance drama\, it considers the various ways in which sex is \"good to think with.\" Essays from this project have been published in such venues as GLQ\, A Companion to Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, and Queer Studies\, and various edited collections.\n\nThis talk is part of IRWG's Lesbian\, Gay\, Queer Research Initiative series. It is free and open to the public.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by Department of American Studies\, Department of Comparative Literature's \"Year of Comparison\"\, Department of English Language and Literature\, Department of History\, Department of Women's Studies\, Labadie Collection\, Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop \"Doing Queer Studies Now\"\, Spectrum Center\, The Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies and The Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mai-Thu Perret: An Ideal for Living
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's multidisciplinary practice fuses feminist politics with classic modernist abstraction and utopian dreams. Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature\, design\, craft\, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art\, design\, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from \"The Crystal Frontier\"\, the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film\, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Simon Dybbroe Møller
DESCRIPTION:Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed\, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew\, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work\, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.\n\nDybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly\, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.\n\nFor Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum\, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lecture: Richard Sennett\, New York University and the London School of Economics
DESCRIPTION:Richard Sennett was born in Chicago in 1943. He grew up in the Cabrini Green Housing Project\, one of the first racially-mixed public housing projects in the United States. At the age of six he began to study the piano and the cello\, eventually working with Frank Miller of the Chicago Symphony and Claus Adam of the Julliard Quartet. Mr. Sennett was one of the last students of the conductor Pierre Monteux. In 1963 a hand injury put a sudden end to his musical career\; for better or worse he then embarked on academic study.\n\nSennett trained at the University of Chicago and at Harvard University\, receiving his Ph.D. in 1969. He then moved to New York where\, in the 1970s he founded\, with Susan Sontag and Joseph Brodsky\, The New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. In the 1980s he served as an advisor to UNESCO and as president of the American Council on Work\; he also taught occasionally at Harvard. In the mid-1990s Sennett began to divide his time between New York University and the London School of Economics. In addition to these academic homes\, he maintains informal connections to MIT\, Trinity College and Cambridge University.
