Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature, design, craft, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art, design, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from "The Crystal Frontier", the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.
Things are not always as they seem in the work of Simon Dybbroe Møller. Indeed, the Danish artist's works can at times appear to have been teleported from a slightly askew, alternate version of the past. Seemingly familiar forms often appear in unexpected configurations and objects we think we recognize turn out to be something else entirely. An abstract wall painting emerges from beneath a layer of peeling plaster. A group of minimalist sculptures turn out to be the pieces of an enlarged Soma cube. This uncertainty is central to the experience of Dybbroe Møller's work, where an initial misrecognition leads to a moment of aesthetic discovery.

Dybbroe Møller's penchant for puzzles and paradoxes reflects his interest in modernism's theoretical aspirations as well as its practical failings. Similarly, his frequent adoption of “outmoded” media both provides him with a diverse artistic palette and a means of questioning the past century's faith in progress through technology and the avant-garde promise of continual artistic development.

For Dybbroe Møller's first solo exhibition in a North American museum, UMMA will present a new body of work that continues his ongoing engagement with and critique of the modernist paradigm of transparency.
Recent oil spills have made the risks of oil extraction and use to our aquatic ecosystems very clear. What are the real results of these accidents and how do they affect us? What can be done to reduce the risks in the future? Are there realistic alternatives? We will discuss these issues on both a local and global level. Join Steve Hamilton, of the Michigan State University W. K. Kellogg Biological Station and Andrew Maynard of the University of Michigan School of Public Health as we discuss the science and policy resulting from recent events. Steve Hamilton was part of the emergency response to the Kalamazoo River oil pipeline rupture, and has been a member of the EPA’s Environmental Advisory Group for that cleanup effort. Andrew Maynard is the Director of the U of M’s Risk Science Center, and his work includes assessing and managing risks to human health and the environment. Prof. Maynard will be recently returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he chairs the Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies. Science Cafés are an opportunity to discuss science topics with experts in an informal setting. Hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 are followed by a brief presentation at 6:00 pm, then by discussion. Everyone is welcome and invited to purchase additional food and beverages. Participants must be 21 to purchase alcoholic beverages.
Producers Russ Bolinger and Shawn Kakuk will introduce and screen their film, "Bright Circle," an independent documentary about the history of Native Americans and Athletics.

Bright Circle explores the history of Native American Indians’ participation and achievement in athletics. The 19th century saw the founding of "Indian Schools" – boarding schools that brought Native American children together from many different tribes, most often against their will. The objective was assimilation. The motto was, "Kill the Indian, Save the Man." In addition to the insistence on removal of tribal customs and conventions, the "Indian Schools" focused their male population on sports, particularly football. Unintentionally, these institutions produced some of the best athletes and teams of the late 19th and early 20th century. Jim Thorpe, honored as the Greatest Athlete of the 20th century, is one example. Members of his family appear in the film.

At the turn of the 20th Century, Native American Indians dominated intercollegiate and professional sports, but over the past one hundred years, Native American Indian participation in popular sports has decreased at an astonishing rate.

"We are both excited and honored to be presenting Bright Circle at the University of Michigan, not only because of the rich history of Wolverine athletics but, more importantly, because of the commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, and choices, for Native Americans. We are proud that Bright Circle is a part of this commitment and feel that our film is a natural fit with these efforts as an educational and inspirational tool." -- Russ Bolinger and Shawn Kakuk
Discussion lead by, Steve Hamilton, of the Michigan State University W.K. Kellogg Biological Station and Andrew Maynard of the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Recent oil spills have made the risks of oil extraction and use to our aquatic ecosystems very clear. What are the results of these accidents and how do they affect us? What can be done to reduce the risks in the future? Are there realistic alternatives? We will discuss these issues on both local and global level.
Science Cafés are an opportunity to discuss science topics with experts in an informal setting and a local establishment. Hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 are followed by a brief presentation at 6:00pm, then by discussion. Everyone is welcome and invited to purchase additional food and beverages. Participants must be 21 to purchase alcoholic beverages. ",
