Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature, design, craft, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art, design, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from "The Crystal Frontier", the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.
Understanding the phylogeny of species allows researchers to
understand the forces generating biodiversity, and may also serve as a
guide to prioritizing particular unique clades or regions for
conservation measures. Dr. Drew will present a case study of a multi-locus species tree for the coral reef fish genus Amblyglyphidodon
(Pomacentridae) from within the Indo-West Pacific region. He first
interpret this phylogeny in the light of an on-going debate over the
mechanisms underpinning the marine biodiversity hotspot of the Coral
Triangle. Then, using several rapidly evolving genes he investigates if evolutionary patterns present at the genus level are recapitulated at the species level. Finally, Dr. Drew will show how this robust phylogeny can be used to structure regional conservation planning.
",

Understanding how this diversity arose can help us better understand where to focus our conservation efforts. The epicenter of tropical marine diversity is centered in the “coral triangle” of Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Indonesia. While this pattern has been known for over a century it is only recently that we can start to answer the question “why are there so many fish in the sea?” This talk will present some cutting edge science that allows us to understand the architecture of how species are made, and the role that natural history museums can play in protecting those species.
