SUMMARY:Exhibition:Places & Spaces: Mapping Science
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?\n\nThe \"Places & Spaces: Mapping Science\" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.\n\nThe exhibit includes over 60 maps\, interactive globes\, illuminated diagrams\, hands-on activities\, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts\, alike.\n\nSeveral University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell\, Molecular and Integrative Physiology\; Lada Adamic\, School of Information\; M. E. J. Newman\, Physics\; Jeff Horon\, Medical School\; Helena Buhr\, Natalie Cotton\, and Jason Owen”Smith\, Sociology and Organizational Studies.\n\nPlease join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10\, 4-6 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mai-Thu Perret: An Ideal for Living
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's multidisciplinary practice fuses feminist politics with classic modernist abstraction and utopian dreams. Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature\, design\, craft\, and performance–-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art\, design\, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from \"The Crystal Frontier\"\, the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film\, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Warren H. Wagner Lecture Plant Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes developing detailed knowledge of an organism can unlock answers to broad biological questions. This talk will focus around green millet\, Setaria viridis\, a little weed that most people encounter in sidewalk cracks. Surprisingly\, this unassuming plant has given us information about how plants are domesticated\, how flowers are arranged on the plant\, and how evolution shapes odd new structures using standard genetic tools. At the same time\, it shows the importance of using tools from taxonomy\, molecular sequence analysis\, quantitative genetics\, and genomics. A weedy green millet was domesticated thousands of years ago in China to produce foxtail millet\, a source of grain. Using quantitative genetics we have identified genes that were selected during the domestication process. The two millets are part of a large group of 100 species that have diversified independently in Asia\, Africa\, and South America. Difficulty in identification of the species led us to develop a phylogeny and a monograph of the genus Setaria. Green millet has become a weed in North America (where it is not native)\, along with another Asian species and an African species. The two Asian ones may hybridize\, but the African one does not. The genome sequence of green millet is available\, and the plants can be transformed. We have preliminary data to show that the genetic toolkit is similar to that in maize and sorghum\, but with interesting modifications. The millets can be recognized easily by distinctive sterile branches in the inflorescence. These are unknown in any other plant\, and we know some of the genes that have to be modified to create them. Green millet thus tells us about how plants can be modified by natural and artificial selection.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Oakland University School of Education and Human Services Winter Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The second lecture in Oakland University School of Education and Human Services Winter Lecture Series features Lance McCready\, Assistant Professor\, Institute for Studies in Education and University of Toronto\, Ontario. \n\nLance McCready is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He teaches graduate courses in Urban Education. Lance's research seeks to develop and promote “intersectional” perspectives on urban education that look at the ways race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality have an impact on\nteaching and learning in inner-city schools. In particular\, he is interested in the way intersectional perspectives can help teachers\, students\, and policymakers better understand disparities in achievement\, participation\, and discipline. His most recent publications focus on \"making space\" for diverse masculinities in urban education and how the experiences of gay and gender non-conforming Black male students reframe the “troubles” Black males face in urban high schools.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series: Keepers of the Water
DESCRIPTION:Water is primary to our bodies\, the Earth and the universe. Ecological artist Betsy Damon has made water the foundation for all her planning and design. Damon creates large-scale art parks featuring sculptural flow forms and public art events to help clean urban waterways and raise water awareness around the globe. In 1995 she conceptualized the Living Water Garden in Chengdu\, China\, and she continues to work on large-scale innovative projects in China and the US\, including an award winning plan for Beijing Olympic Park\, and the Trinity Lakes project in Dallas\, Texas\, to create a 23-mile long\, ecologically sound corridor on the Trinity River. Her nonprofit organization\, Keepers of the Waters\, provides information and technical support for others working with similar design principles and processes.
