"description":"Contemporary Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's multidisciplinary practice fuses feminist politics with classic modernist abstraction and utopian dreams. Her installations synthesize a range of media and genres--including literature, design, craft, and performance\u2013-conjuring an imaginary alternate history of twentieth-century art, design, and social activism. Much of Perret's work over the past decade has stemmed from \"The Crystal Frontier\", the fictional archive of a female utopian commune called New Ponderosa. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles or film, Perret's works infuse the formal vocabulary of modernism with a distinctly handmade aesthetic. Perret's exhibition at UMMA will present an episodic overview of her work from the past decade and will include numerous works never before exhibited in North America.",

Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?\r\n\r\nThe \"Places & Spaces: Mapping Science\" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.\r\n\r\nThe exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.\r\n\r\nSeveral University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen\u201d\u0090Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.\r\n\r\nPlease join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.",

"description":"Explore the tremendous impact of the King James Bible on the social and culture life of the United States from the colonial period to the present day. Brian Wilson, Professor of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University, will explain why this particular translation came to be so prominent in the life of the nation, influencing such figures as Herman Melville, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr. He will also discuss the special status of the King James Bible today, even as it competes with a galaxy of new Bible translations. \r\n\r\nThis is the third and last in a series of lectures intended to complement the annual Bible Exhibit, which this year celebrates 400 years of the King James Bible.",

"description":"Bronze Elegance was initially established by the multicultural council in Alice Lloyd Residence Hall, also known as MYSTIC, to celebrate the beauty of the diversity on campus. The purpose and aim of the Bronze Elegance Fashion Show is to break stereotypes through creating a show in which models could represent their different\r\nshapes, sizes, ethnicities, and religions. Students participating in the show represent the diversity of the University of Michigan, and they have been showcased in our annual show for three decades.\r\nBronze Elegance strives to promote awareness about our diverse world. There is no better way to showcase them other than a fashion show. Our show contains hip music, lighting, fashion, 50+ models, performances to make a very entertaining night that many enjoy every year. Our models are selected to represent the many cultures we have right here at the University of Michigan, and they are not chosen by size, height, or beauty, for Bronze Elegance feels that beauty is in all of us. The roster of models challenge what the media considers \u201cbeauty\u201d\u009d. We believe by showing different attributes of people, we are able to spark discussion between communities and friends. Since our show targets a diverse crowd, we create a place to socialize and share a common ground. Bronze Elegance has a successful show every year, and our goal this year is to keep this reputation, while advancing in breaking these cultural stereotypes. Each year BE donates all of the funds it raises to a charity. This year all of our funds will go to Detroit Helping Our Youth Development. \r\n",

"description":"Blackthorn has been offering their uniquely rich tapestry of Celtic music around the Great Lakes since 1984. Traditional songs of emigration, sea shanties, lively jigs and reels, and haunting ancient airs combine with some of Ireland's best contemporary songs for a musical experience that evokes the beauty, history, and legend of Ireland and its people. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments, including wooden flute, accordion, tin whistle, five-string banjo, cittern, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band's tight four-part harmonies. Based in Detroit, Blackthorn can usually be found at O'Mara's Pub and Restaurant in Berkley, and their appearances on WJR's St. Patrick's Day show are a Michigan Celtic tradition. This evening they lend their talents in support of ACS CAN-- the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. ACS CAN is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society that holds lawmakers accountable for their words and their actions. ACS CAN asks that our leaders not only talk about fighting cancer, but take real steps toward decreasing the number of people suffering and dying from cancer.",
