SUMMARY:Exhibition:Places & Spaces: Mapping Science
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?\n\nThe \"Places & Spaces: Mapping Science\" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.\n\nThe exhibit includes over 60 maps\, interactive globes\, illuminated diagrams\, hands-on activities\, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts\, alike.\n\nSeveral University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell\, Molecular and Integrative Physiology\; Lada Adamic\, School of Information\; M. E. J. Newman\, Physics\; Jeff Horon\, Medical School\; Helena Buhr\, Natalie Cotton\, and Jason Owen”Smith\, Sociology and Organizational Studies.\n\nPlease join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10\, 4-6 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:American Churches Discover Homosexuality!
DESCRIPTION:The sixty years of debate from the first Kinsey Report (1948) to ex-gay programs for newly out teens have seen dramatic changes in Christian talk about same-sex desire. Whether liberal or conservative\, American churches now use vocabularies\, models\, and assumptions about sex that would have been unrecognizable to earlier generations of believers. More importantly\, contemporary Christians talk about homosexuality frequently\, publicly\, and in ways that would have caused scandal sixty years ago.\n\nThrough all this rhetorical flux\, one thing that hasn't changed is anxiety around the figure of the adolescent. The preoccupation takes many forms\, implicit and explicit\, but at certain moments it stands out plainly. It is nowhere more obvious than in Anita Bryant's 1967 campaign against a non-discrimination ordinance in Miami. Jordan focuses on how Bryant uses concern for the threatened and threatening young to appropriate\, to 'naturalize' the character of the homosexual for conservative Christian use.\n\nMark Jordan is on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School. He taught previously at the University of Notre Dame and at Emory University\, where he was Candler Professor of Religion. His interests include Christian ethics of sex and gender\, the limits of religious language\, the rhetoric of theology\, and the ritual creation of religious identities. His books include The Invention of Sodomy in Christian Theology (1997)\, winner of the 1999 John Boswell Prize for lesbian and gay history\; The Ethics of Sex (2002)\; Telling Truths in Church: Scandal\, Flesh\, and Christian Speech (2003)\; Rewritten Theology: Aquinas after His Readers (2006)\; and\, with Virginia Burrus and Karmen MacKendrick\, Seducing Augustine: Bodies\, Desires\, Confessions (2010). A new book on the rhetoric of American church controversies over homosexuality will appear early this year.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science and the City
DESCRIPTION:Cities have long been understood for shaping\, and being shaped by\, scientific and technical institutions and the knowledge they generate. The credibility of scientific claims stems from widely shared assumptions about where processes of discovery and justification take place\, and about the people\, instruments\, specimens\, inscriptions and infrastructure assembled in specific places. Universities\, laboratories\, museums\, hospitals and other ”˜places of science’ are often located in cities and act as sites for\nlegitimate science-based public decisions. At the same time\, science and scientific knowledge have shaped urban life – from transport and communication systems to urban planning and architectural norms. This talk explores these Science and the City connections through the lens of urban health and argues that in order to address persistent\nurban health inequities\, greater emphasis needs to be placed on ensuring that the science underwriting public policy is more open and democratic. A democratic science for the city emphasizes that truth is provisional\, that questioning of experts should be encouraged\, that steps forward may need corrective steps back\, and that understanding history is the surest foundation for moving toward more healthy and just cities.\n\n\nJason Corburn is Associate Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning and Co-Director of the Master of City Planning and Master of Public Health Degree Program\, University of California - Berkeley. His research focuses on the links between environmental health and social justice in cities\, notions of expertise in science-based policy making\, and the role of local knowledge in addressing environmental and public health problems. His research and practice works to build\npartnerships between urban residents\, professional scientists and decision-makers in order to collaboratively generate policy and planning solutions that improve the qualities of cities and the well-being of residents\, particularly the poor and people of color. Corburn is currently working with local governments and non-profits in California\, the South Bronx\, and the Mathare slum of Nairobi\, Kenya\, in projects developing “healthy city planning” indicators and community generated development alternatives. His book\, Street Science: Community Knowledge and Environmental Health Justice (The MIT Press\, 2005)\, won the 2007 Paul Davidoff best book award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP). Corburn's latest book is Toward the Healthy City: People\, Places\, and the Politics of Urban Planning (The MIT Press\, 2009). He received his B.A. from Brandeis University\, and Master in City Planning and\nPh.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\n\n
