Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?

The "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.

The exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.

Several University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen”Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.

Please join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.",

This year’s exhibition will include more than 300 works of art by over 200 artists, shedding light on the talents to be found behind prison walls and encouraging the public to take a second look.

Participating artists express gratitude to organizers and gallery visitors alike, stressing the show’s impact on their lives and the community at large. “I believe that your program gives the public a glimpse into the type of things that inspire even the most downtrodden of us all” writes one artist. “When people see our work, for a few moments, they forget that this work was done by a felon, but by another human being. A human being who has the same thoughts, emotions, and inspirations as they do, and for that one moment, a major social and political barrier is shattered.”

As a result of this annual event, the amount of art created in Michigan prisons has increased dramatically, and Michigan prison artists have become national leaders, inspiring others to create art behind bars.
",

The report, "The 2010 State of Higher Education for LGBT People," is the most comprehensive national report to date chronicling the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals at colleges and universities in the United States.

With the acknowledgment that institutions differ in the level of attention and emphasis on issues of diversity and campus climate, it is safe to say that a campus climate offering equitable learning opportunities for all students, academic freedom for all faculty, and fairness in employment for all staff and administrators is one of the primary responsibilities of institutions of higher education.

The presentation will [1] provide information on the current challenges facing LGBTQQAI students and employees, [2] review the significant differences between 2003 and 2009 with regard to the campus climate for LGBTQQAI students and employees and how this may influence policies and programs, and [3] offer campus advocates recommendations for addressing the challenges facing LGBTQQAI student and employees.

Contact the Spectrum Center, www.spectrumcenter@umich.edu, for more information.
Water is the story of the new century. In the U.S., the Golden Age of Water -- in which we view water as naturally abundant, dependable, safe, and cheap -- is coming to an end. And we're in for a rude shock. We are entering an era of water scarcity -- and not just in "dry" places like the U.S. Southwest and the Middle East. In this talk, Charles Fishman helps us see water in a new, and urgent, light. He circles the globe to tackle everything from municipal delivery of water, to the vast but fragile network of water supplies for agriculture and industry, to the entry of corporations into the world of supplying water. How are businesses trying to create safe supplies and make money? And how does this affect you? In the future, how will we get water? How will we distribute it, use it, pay for it. In a thorough and enthralling talk, Fishman shows you how the new "water economy" will reshape global economics, global politics, the global food supply -- and the way we live.
Sponsored by the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute, the Center for Global Health, and the Water Semester
",
