SUMMARY:Exhibition:16th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 16 years\, this nationally recognized show has grown to be the largest exhibition of prisoner art in the country. This year’s exhibition will include more than 300 works of art by over 200 artists\, shedding light on the talents to be found behind prison walls and encouraging the public to take a second look. \n\nParticipating artists express gratitude to organizers and gallery visitors alike\, stressing the show’s impact on their lives and the community at large. “I believe that your program gives the public a glimpse into the type of things that inspire even the most downtrodden of us all” writes one artist. “When people see our work\, for a few moments\, they forget that this work was done by a felon\, but by another human being. A human being who has the same thoughts\, emotions\, and inspirations as they do\, and for that one moment\, a major social and political barrier is shattered.”\n\nAs a result of this annual event\, the amount of art created in Michigan prisons has increased dramatically\, and Michigan prison artists have become national leaders\, inspiring others to create art behind bars.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists
DESCRIPTION:Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes\, techniques\, and design\, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea\, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative\, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung\, Lee In Chin\, Lee Kang Hyo\, Lee Young-jae\, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar\, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions\, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown\, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.

SUMMARY:Performance:VOICES OF MEN
DESCRIPTION:Ben Atherton-Zeman – spokesperson\, speaker and performer on issues of sexism and violence prevention – will present his highly acclaimed “Voices of Men” performance on Wednesday\, April 6\, for the annual Tamara Williams Memorial Lecture. \n\n“Voices of Men” is a multi-media play that deals with issues of sexual assault and date rape\, domestic and dating violence\, sexual harassment and objectification. The play uses humor and celebrity male voice impressions to bring these topics to an audience in a way that minimizes defensiveness. Each male character in the play is forced to deal with one of the issues listed above – in doing so\, they come to the realization that they are\, in fact\, part of the problem. \n\nThe performance includes graphic images of violence. More information about Mr. Atherton-Zeman and his work can be seen at http://www.voicesofmen.org \n\nTamara Williams was a University of Michigan student when she was killed by her boyfriend in 1997. The annual lecture is meant to commemorate her life\, raise awareness of domestic and dating violence\, and increase interest in their prevention.\n\n
