Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?

The "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.

The exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.

Several University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen”Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.

Please join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.
Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes, techniques, and design, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung, Lee In Chin, Lee Kang Hyo, Lee Young-jae, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.",

Petra Kuppers will share some of the working practices of a large-scale project in Aotearoa/New Zealand, centered around a hospice, where Maori and white immigrant communities used community poetry, movement and visual art to create new horizons for cohabitation on the land. You will come away from this workshop with a number of strategies for lifting poetry off the page and into our bodies, for working in communities, for honoring post-coloniality and the weight of history, and for working towards just futures.
Do you curse? Do you use "vocabulary" words? Is macaronic language fair
game? And what the hell do you rhyme with love?! There's a reason we roll our eyes at the love/dove rhyme. It's a cliche, it's predictable, and the last time it surprised anyone was in the 16th century. But four hundred years later, we're still relying on it. Why? It's a familiar combination. It's the first line that comes to our mind, so we use it. But to write well, we need to write actively. Consider that word choice is just that--a choice. Whether we use an aggressive word like attack or a softer word like barrage changes our poem, and so changes our performance. Likewise we must decide whether or not to curse, use rhyme, or work in SAT vocabulary. We'll discuss all of this openly, share what has and hasn't worked for us in the past, and in doing so come up with a set of guidelines for future use. Then we'll do writing exercises to practice and create. You'll go home with a better sense of how to get the most word-bang for your word-buck, as well as a new poem or three.

In this workshop, we'll spend a little time with a sampling of poems from the past two centuries that are about or are associated with social and political revolutions. Poetry can chronicle and incite and bear witness to social change in ways that are importantly different from newspapers, propaganda pieces, political pamphlets, and other public documents. We'll try and get into some of these differences and we'll work on figuring out what kinds of things poetry has to offer to people in times of political and social challenge.",

Join Lauren Banka, WU-Slam's President, and Aaron Samuels, one of its founders, for a conversation about how to create and sustain a healthy, productive, and impactful slam community. In the last three years, WU-SLam, Washington University in St. Louis's slam organization, has gone from nonexistence to a major on-campus and national force, including packing out 700-people theatres within five minutes of doors opening and having a regular 30-50 person attendance at weekly writing workshops. This conversation will include issues of logistics, publicity, and creating an artistic community that is both challenging and supportive.
The world’s tropical forests harbor the majority of Earth’s biodiversity, regulate global climate, and form the basis for the livelihoods of rural communities worldwide, but the extent, structure, and composition of these forests are changing dramatically under the influence of human activities and their future is uncertain. These changes, however, cannot be treated in isolation. Rather, they must be understood as an aspect of complex and fluid landscape transformations such as agricultural expansion and urban-rural migration driven by regional and global factors. These direct impacts of human activities on forests interact with other anthropogenic drivers such as climate variability to affect the capacity of forests to provide ecosystem services. Dr Uriarte will present results from research undertaken in the island about Puerto Rico about the compound effects of hurricanes and land use legacies of forest dynamics at the stand and landscape scales, and the consequences of these changes for water quality in the island.
It’s a Martian exclusive! Andrew Kessler, author of "MARTIAN SUMMER: Robot Arms, Cowboy Spacemen, and My 90 Days with the Phoenix Mars Mission," gives a warts-and-all look at the Phoenix Mars mission. The Phoenix was sent to study the history of water and habitability potential in the Martian arctic's ice-rich soil.

Kessler spent three months in mission control of the Phoenix Mars expedition--with 130 top NASA scientists and engineers--during the Mars exploration. The story is a humorous human drama about modern-day Magellans battling NASA politics and the bizarre world of daily life in mission control. Kessler was the first “regular guy” ever granted unfettered access to such an event.

Andrew Kessler is a creative director at HUGE. He co-produced "Mars: The Quest for Life" on the Discovery Channel and holds a degree in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

The presentation will be followed by a book sale and signing, courtesy of Nicola’s Books.
Complaining about government waste is almost a cliché. At the very least, sustainability does not seem to be on their checklist of mandatory considerations before making most decisions. Everything from policy to the execution of initiatives often misses the mark on the dire need to transition our society to one that is in alignment with nature, rather than at odds with it. What, if any, national government strategy exists to encourage social progress that meets the needs of everyone, effective protection of the environment, and prudent use of natural resources, while maintaining high and stable levels of economic growth and employment? Added to these ongoing issues is the unrest in the Middle East and its impact on the price of energy. These are questions to be explored with a panel of U-M faculty, alumni experts and government insiders.
Come join campus and community members in the Take Back the Night Rally and March! This event is on Thursday, April 7th, from 7-9pm on the University of Michigan Diag. We are joining together in advocating against sexual assualt in our community and celebrating survivors. We will have musical acts, dance performances, speakers, poetry, statistics, and demands to draw attention to this serious issue. Our goal is to highlight how sexual assault can affect lives and communities in various ways as well as to showcase the strengths and resiliencies of survivors. The Rally will last approximately from 7-8pm, and immediately after we will begin our March through the streets of Ann Arbor. We will have signs, banners, drums, and chants to bring this issue to the streets. We will end the March with a brief candlelight vigil on the U-M Diag to remember those who have been lost. This event is completely FREE and open to all ages, genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, ability statuses, and any others! We hope to see you there!
After all of the formality of Charity Auction, come let loose with Out in Public. We're hosting a rip-roaring night of karaoke at Aut Bar the Thursday after Charity Auction. The idea is to pair up with the person you share everything with at the Ford School (i.e. the latest/lamest gossip, Jimmy John's dates, tables in the reading room, etc.) and sing your heart out in an epic duet for all to see. Bromances and work spouse partners are encouraged, but we're definitely eager to see anyone and everyone take the stage. There may even be a panel of celebrity judges--fingers crossed! We'll be signing partners up the week of the event and selling advance/discount tickets for those who aren't commitment-phobes. ",
