SUMMARY:Exhibition:Back to the Sea: The Evolution of Whales
DESCRIPTION:Scientists long before Darwin wondered why whales\, which are mammals\, not fish\, live in the sea. Evidence suggests that land-living mammals waded into ancient oceans 50 to 40 million years ago to catch plentiful fish for food. Over time\, such animals adapted to an ever-more aquatic lifestyle\, until by 40 to 35 million years ago\, all ancient whales were fully aquatic. The exhibit includes a spectacular 50-foot cast skeleton of Basilosaurus\, which swims through the air in the Museum’s Hall of Evolution. Also featured are specimens of Maiacetus\, new information panels\, and video interviews with paleontologist and curator Philip Gingerich.Sponsored by the Exhibit Museum of Natural History\n

SUMMARY:Rally / Mass Meeting:End Bullying Now!
DESCRIPTION: Join the Michigan Democratic Party LGBT & Allies Caucus (www.mdplgbt.org) and the Michigan School Tolerance Campaign on Saturday\, April 9 at 10:00 am in Howell\, MI for a march to end bullying in Michigan schools. Please meet behind the Court House at 200 E. Grand River. This is part of a broad-based\, bipartisan effort to pass the enumerated version of the anti-bullying bill Senator Glen Anderson proposed during this legislative session. Wayne State University Law Professor Jocelyn Benson\, Michelle Brown of the National Black Justice Coalition\, Phil Volk Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party LGBT Caucus\, and Christopher Armstrong and Brendan Campbell of the U of M Student Assembly will speak.\n\n While the march is about opposing bullying in schools in general\, the Michigan School Tolerance Campaign is also working on getting the state legislature to pass Senator Anderson’s SB 0159\, a strong bill against bullying in K-12 schools. The bill specifies that certain groups of students who have traditionally been the targets of bullying must be protected under the law\, including youth with disabilities and gay\, lesbian\, bisexual and transgender youth. Please note that the bill states that ALL bullying must stop in schools. The enumeration\, or listing of groups that must be protected\, is simply to prevent school officials from excusing or turning a blind eye to bullying of certain groups of students whom schools have not traditionally protected.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists
DESCRIPTION:Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes\, techniques\, and design\, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea\, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative\, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung\, Lee In Chin\, Lee Kang Hyo\, Lee Young-jae\, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar\, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions\, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown\, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.
