Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?

The "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.

The exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.

Several University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen”Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.

Please join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.
Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes, techniques, and design, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung, Lee In Chin, Lee Kang Hyo, Lee Young-jae, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.",

The Thai classic "The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen" blends tragedy and comedy with romance in a non-stop adventure of love, war, infidelity, betrayal and the supernatural. The ultimate love triangle, "The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen" evolved from a folktale preserved in the oral tradition into an epic poem widely considered to be a cornerstone of classical Thai Literature. This is the first time it has been translated into English.

Free and open to all. After the presentation, you are invited to attend a related Translation Workshop in the Area Programs Reference Room of the Hatcher Graduate Library.

Co-sponsored by University Library and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
Ecological communities are characterized by a wide diversity of species with important functional, economic, and aesthetic value. Ecologists have long questioned how this diversity is maintained. Classic theory shows that stable coexistence requires competitors to differ in their niches, motivating numerous investigations of ecological differences presumed to maintain diversity. That niche differences are key to coexistence, however, has recently been challenged by the neutral theory, which explains coexistence by the equivalence of competitors. The ensuing controversy has motivated calls for better understanding the collective importance of niche differences for the diversity observed in ecological communities. Dr. Levine will present a novel integration of theory and experimentation to show that niche differences collectively stabilize the dynamics of experimental communities of serpentine annual plants. The study used field-parameterized population models to develop a null expectation for community dynamics without the stabilizing effects of niche differences. The population growth rates predicted by this null model varied by several orders of magnitude between species, sufficient for rapid competitive exclusion. Moreover, after four generations of community change in the field, Shannon diversity was over 100% greater in communities stabilized by niche differences relative to those exhibiting dynamics predicted by the null model. Last, in an experiment manipulating species’ relative abundance, population growth rates increased when species became rare - the demographic signature of niche differences. This research provides strong evidence that species differences play a critical role in stabilizing species diversity. ",

Premiering in 1947, Brigadoon, is a musical fantasy that weaves music, dance, and story into an enchanting tribute to romantic love. Notably, Brigadoon won the 1947 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. It is a wonderful tale of two American men, Tommy and Jeff, who get lost in a small village in the Scottish highlands where preparations for a wedding are taking place. Suddenly, Tommy and Jeff realize that there is something special about this village and they must decide how important love really is to them. Brigadoon allows us to escape to a world where “when one loves deeply enough, anythin' is possible. Even miracles.”

Our seating areas will be in Sections 1 and 5.

More information about the Brigadoon event.

Directions and parking

Questions: Contact Maddie Ryan at maddiery@umich.edu.",
