DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?\n\nThe \"Places & Spaces: Mapping Science\" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.\n\nThe exhibit includes over 60 maps\, interactive globes\, illuminated diagrams\, hands-on activities\, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts\, alike.\n\nSeveral University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell\, Molecular and Integrative Physiology\; Lada Adamic\, School of Information\; M. E. J. Newman\, Physics\; Jeff Horon\, Medical School\; Helena Buhr\, Natalie Cotton\, and Jason Owen”Smith\, Sociology and Organizational Studies.\n\nPlease join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10\, 4-6 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists  
DESCRIPTION:Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes\, techniques\, and design\, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea\, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative\, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung\, Lee In Chin\, Lee Kang Hyo\, Lee Young-jae\, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar\, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions\, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown\, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.

DESCRIPTION:This new multimedia production brings together the work of Ernestine Ruben\, experimental photographer of the human form\; Monica Ponce de Leon\, architect of highly sensual\, muscular and poetic structures\; Peter Sparling\, choreographer/video artist of new movement forms\; and Erik Santos\, composer of scores for a wide range of musical ensembles and Butoh performances. The supple\, sensual environment they will create together will feature a video synthesis of photographic imaging and the choreography of actual bodies projected onto the skins of a multilayered\, membrane-like structure\, providing a walk-through body\, an interactive site for live dance\, music and poetry\, and a luminous web for visitors to explore.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit shows examples of early printed books produced in Venice from the fifteenth century onward\, from the time when Venice was a culturally renowned center for book printing. It also features a display of images of the city\, including film clips depicting Venice in a theatrical light.\n\nThis exhibit is part of the LSA Winter 2011 Water Theme Semester. It is on display in the Special Collections Library\, on the 7th floor of the Hatcher Graduate Library\, and is available during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:Life Sciences Orchestra concert
DESCRIPTION:The U-M Life Sciences Orchestra\, made up of faculty\, staff and students from the biomedical and health areas of the University\, will play a program of five pieces\, four of them with a Spanish connection. \n\nMusic Director Oriol Sans\, a native of Spain\, will lead the LSO in Spain-inspired works by Ravel\, Falla and Berio\, as well as the first movement of Dvorak's Cello Concerto\, with soloist Adrienne Cheng. Assistant conductor Elim Chan will conduct Beethoven's Egmont Overture\, which itself has a Spanish connection. A pre-concert talk at 7:15 will illuminate all of the works. \n\nThe concert is open to the public and no tickets are necessary. Donations will be accepted at the door.

DESCRIPTION:The Michigan Mobile Phone Ensemble is presenting its second public concert featuring all new works by students in Performing Arts Technology\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the School of Information at the University of Michigan. The concert is the outcome of a multi-disciplinary course taught during the Winter 2011 semester by Professor Georg Essl. It merges engineering practices\, mobile phone programming\, and sound synthesis with new music performance\, composition and interactive media arts. Students designed and developed their own new mobile phone instruments and composed new electronic music works exploring the creative potential of their own technical creations.All new works written and performed by: Robert Alexander\, Michael Kim\, Michael Main\, Shaagnik Mukherji\, Lizzie Paris\, Anton Pugh\, Ricardo Rodriguez-Laureano\, Paul Sokolik\, Scott Wagner\, and Yefei Wang.
