Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?

The "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.

The exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.

Several University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen”Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.

Please join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.
Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes, techniques, and design, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung, Lee In Chin, Lee Kang Hyo, Lee Young-jae, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.
In 1995, Ronni Sanlo, at the time the Director of the University of Michigan’s Office of LGBT Affairs, designed the first Lavender Graduation, an event specifically for LGBT and ally students. Lavender Graduation has since become an annual ceremony conducted on numerous campuses to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students and to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the University. Graduating students, including undergraduates, graduates, and professional students, are invited to take part in Lavender Graduation, which occurs each year in conjunction with university-wide commencement events.

Lavender Graduation is a celebration of achievement for the University’s LGBTQ, Ally and similarly-identified students. Undergraduate, Graduate and pre-/Professional graduates may participate. LavGrad, at its foundation, celebrates the achievements of the graduate through the lens of their identity across the spectrum of gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation.

For some students, the University of Michigan was the first place they explored and grew in their LGBTQ identities. For some students, U-M was the place their personal passions met their academic pursuits. No matter what the case – LavGrad is designed to celebrate achievement and identity.

LavGrad also serves as a powerful reminder that LGBTQ and Ally students live OUT, productive, healthy and engaged lives, often doing so in the face of adversity inside and outside the classroom. In this way, LavGrad bolsters the resilience of graduates as they move forward and current students as they progress.

Lavender is important to LGBT history. It is a combination of the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear in concentration camps and the black triangle designating lesbians as political prisoners in Nazi Germany. The LGBT civil rights movement took these symbols of hatred and combined them to make symbols and color of pride and community.",
