In 2010, writing is in motion as never before: students text one another on the go and around the clock; colleagues and friends use wikis to brainstorm and to co- author important documents; choreographers and filmmakers use motion capture technology to “write down” movement and gesture; and poets invent new multimedia poetic forms. The places we write, and the features of writing we value, are today more varied – and often more contested – than ever before.

One especially prominent dimension of these changes is a reconfiguration of public and private space. A single ordinary writing activity today may traverse any number of borders. Classrooms connect with authentic audiences via public electronic portfolios and blogs; private companies partner with public universities to digitize library holdings; personal emails and business memos are archived in the NCTE National Gallery of Writing; faculty share course materials with students on other continents.

The University of Michigan and the Sweetland Writing Center are the site of vibrant and varied scholarship and dialogue around these new writing technologies and practices. Exciting work in multimedia pedagogy and production, open source technologies, digital humanities, and new media performance make Ann Arbor a vital and welcoming destination for the 2011 Computers and Writing conference.
Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes, techniques, and design, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung, Lee In Chin, Lee Kang Hyo, Lee Young-jae, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.
Are you interested in seeing science from above? Curious to see what impact one single person or invention can have? Keen to find pockets of innovation? Desperate for better tools to manage the information flood? Or are you simply fascinated by maps?

The "Places & Spaces: Mapping Science" exhibit demonstrates the power of maps to navigate and manage physical places but also abstract topic spaces. It introduces knowledge mapping techniques to the general public. It is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale.

The exhibit includes over 60 maps, interactive globes, illuminated diagrams, hands-on activities, and a wealth of information for researchers and map enthusiasts, alike.

Several University of Michigan faculty created maps included in the exhibit: Santiago Schnell, Molecular and Integrative Physiology; Lada Adamic, School of Information; M. E. J. Newman, Physics; Jeff Horon, Medical School; Helena Buhr, Natalie Cotton, and Jason Owen”Smith, Sociology and Organizational Studies.

Please join us at the Places & Spaces opening reception on March 10, 4-6 pm.
Great acoustic Americana–from Australians!

It was, first of all, their fascination with American roots music–bluegrass especially–that drew singer/bassist Carol Young and multiple stringed-instrument master Kym Warner from Australia to Austin, Texas, where they began performing together, and later to their current home base in Nashville. An urge to challenge themselves, to test the limits of any established genre, guided them on their first three albums. It kept them focused as they accumulated awards and acclamations, from the Americana Music Award in 2006 for Emerging Artist of the Year through tours with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to last year’s Best Country Instrumental Performance Grammy nomination for "Mucky The Duck," a track from the "Viridian" album in 2008, and another in 2010 for "The Crystal Merchant" from "Fascination." "If you like Nickel Creek and the Dixie Chicks--bands that can really play and sing--then you’ll love the Greencards," says Kevin Connor of Austin's KGSR-FM radio. The Greencards are coming to Michigan with an as-yet-untitled new release!",
