DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Gerald Ford in Mao's China\" features photos\, artifacts\, and especially documents\, some newly declassified\, from five dramatic years in U.S.- China relations.  Congressional leader Ford visited China in 1972 at the behest of President Nixon.  He returned to Beijing in 1975\, as President himself\, just months before Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong died and China entered an unpredictable transition.\n\nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists  
DESCRIPTION:Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes\, techniques\, and design\, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea\, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative\, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung\, Lee In Chin\, Lee Kang Hyo\, Lee Young-jae\, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar\, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions\, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown\, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Amalia Pica
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by a desire for civic participation\, Amalia Pica's work often takes the form of temporary interventions on buildings\, monuments\, or objects\, documenting the artist's insertion of her own body into the landscape or her subtle alteration of it. The London-based Argentinian artist (b. 1978) works primarily with sculpture\, photography\, film\, and installation\, adopting a conceptual approach marked by wit and a sense of play. Perception\, time\, memory\, and a sense of how particular gestures read in different cultural contexts are central to Pica's work\, alternately highlighting moments of connection and disjunction. The promise - as well as the uncertainty - of communication is a persistent concern in Pica's oeuvre. Megaphones\, antennae\, podiums\, and signal flags are recurring motifs\, though rarely are these devices shown in a moment of use. Depicted at rest or disconnected from their functionality\, they become figures for potential communication\, carriers of a message that always remains hypothetical.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watermarks from Venice Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit shows examples of early printed books produced in Venice from the fifteenth century onward\, from the time when Venice was a culturally renowned center for book printing. It also features a display of images of the city\, including film clips depicting Venice in a theatrical light.\n\nThis exhibit is part of the LSA Winter 2011 Water Theme Semester. It is on display in the Special Collections Library\, on the 7th floor of the Hatcher Graduate Library\, and is available during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spectrum Center Ally Training
DESCRIPTION:This is our standard Ally Training\, but instead of being one six-hour training we have broken it into two 3 hour sessions. By registering for this training you are agreeing to be present for training on Wednesday\, June 8 AND Thursday June 9 from 1pm-4pm. The University of Michigan Spectrum Center is pleased to announce training dates for the LGBTQ Ally Training Program. Pre-registration is required. The LGBTQ Ally Training Program\, started in 2005\, seeks to empower members of the University community to be active allies to LGBTQ people. More than just a Safe Space program\, the Ally Training Program uses a social justice framework to guide participants through a curriculum that bridges new knowledge of developmental theory to the lived experiences of LGBTQ and Ally-identified people. A variety of topics are covered in an array of learning modalities: LGBTQ and Ally development\, definitions and terms\, resources and referrals\, case studies and more. The curriculum also incorporates with mixed media presentations and interactive role plays. Participants and trainers approach the sensitive topic of LGBTQ life by creating a safe space for dialogue\, while challenging pre-conceived notions. The learning environment is active and the conversations are genuine. The LGBTQ Ally Training Program is open to all members of the community regardless of sexual orientation\, gender identity and gender expression. Participants affirm a commitment to supporting the right of LGBTQ people to fair and equal treatment\; a commitment to serving as a source of support and/or information about LGBTQ people and issues\; a commitment to learning about and promoting principles of social justice\; an ability to commit to training time. DESCRIPTION:Produced on Broadway by Elton John and his partner David Furnish\, Next Fall examines the controversial topic of religion and its stance on gay relationships in contemporary society. Next Fall received massive critical acclaim in New York\, both off and on-Broadway\, and garnered Tony\, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards Best Play nominations. The New York Times called it an “artful\, thoughtful and very moving story” and “an intellectual stealth bomb.” \n\nBrief description of the play:\n\nGay couple\, Adam and Luke\, are constantly at odds over their religious beliefs. Adam doesn't understand how Luke\, a devout Christian closeted to his family\, can pray to the same God that is supposed to condemn him.
