DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Gerald Ford in Mao's China\" features photos\, artifacts\, and especially documents\, some newly declassified\, from five dramatic years in U.S.- China relations.  Congressional leader Ford visited China in 1972 at the behest of President Nixon.  He returned to Beijing in 1975\, as President himself\, just months before Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong died and China entered an unpredictable transition.\n\nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists  
DESCRIPTION:Korean ceramics have been admired since the 12th century for their superb craftsmanship and original shapes\, techniques\, and design\, as well as for their visual reflection of the culture's history and soul. This exhibition focuses on five artists with well established reputations in Korea\, whose visually stunning ceramic objects acknowledge and engage with Korean clay traditions yet embody innovative\, unexpected art making and conceptual approaches. Life in Ceramics brings together for the first time the work of Kim Yikyung\, Lee In Chin\, Lee Kang Hyo\, Lee Young-jae\, and Yoon Kwang-cho. These contemporary ceramicists take familiar\, everyday forms such as bowls and vases as a starting point from which to explore the astonishing beauty of these shapes as works of art. Each produces work grounded in Korea’s ancient ceramic traditions\, but takes it in new and often surprising directions. Objects from each artist’s everyday ware collection will also be shown\, so that visitors can examine how each artist makes the distinction between fine art and functional design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UMMA Projects: Amalia Pica
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by a desire for civic participation\, Amalia Pica's work often takes the form of temporary interventions on buildings\, monuments\, or objects\, documenting the artist's insertion of her own body into the landscape or her subtle alteration of it. The London-based Argentinian artist (b. 1978) works primarily with sculpture\, photography\, film\, and installation\, adopting a conceptual approach marked by wit and a sense of play. Perception\, time\, memory\, and a sense of how particular gestures read in different cultural contexts are central to Pica's work\, alternately highlighting moments of connection and disjunction. The promise - as well as the uncertainty - of communication is a persistent concern in Pica's oeuvre. Megaphones\, antennae\, podiums\, and signal flags are recurring motifs\, though rarely are these devices shown in a moment of use. Depicted at rest or disconnected from their functionality\, they become figures for potential communication\, carriers of a message that always remains hypothetical.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit shows examples of early printed books produced in Venice from the fifteenth century onward\, from the time when Venice was a culturally renowned center for book printing. It also features a display of images of the city\, including film clips depicting Venice in a theatrical light.\n\nThis exhibit is part of the LSA Winter 2011 Water Theme Semester. It is on display in the Special Collections Library\, on the 7th floor of the Hatcher Graduate Library\, and is available during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown explores the space where early jazz met Texas swing\, where Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang met Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. Guitarist Whit Smith and fiddler Elana James have become a world-class country-jazz duo\, challenging each other and reading each other's minds at every turn. Add in the insouciant lyrics of the era and the vigorous slap-bass rhythms of Jake Erwin\, and you've got virtuoso small-group western swing that's beyond infectious. If you've seen the Hot Club before\, be advised that they're only getting better --they went on hiatus\, got back together\, and came out of it stronger. Their latest album\, \"What Makes Bob Holler\,\" is a tribute to Bob Wills and delves into some of the Texas Playboys' more unusual material.
