"description":"Cartoons as a weapon. Ben Yomen used cartoons to fight bosses he felt had no respect for their laborers and to ridicule an American Congress he felt had no respect for its constituents. Many of his cartoons that were published in the 1940s have such a timeless message that they could have been published in 2011.\r\n\r\nIn a 1943 Federated Press survey, Yoman was voted \"most popular cartoonist in the labor press today\" by AFL (American Federation of Labor), CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) and Railroad Brotherhood editors. His cartoons documented the labor struggles of the day.\r\n\r\nThis collection of Ben Yoman cartoons is part of the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the U-M Special Collections Library. The Labadie Collection is the oldest research collection of radical history in the United States, documenting a wide variety of international social protest movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is named for anarchist and labor organizer Joseph Antoine Labadie (1850-1933).",

"description":"Motivated by a desire for civic participation, Amalia Pica's work often takes the form of temporary interventions on buildings, monuments, or objects, documenting the artist's insertion of her own body into the landscape or her subtle alteration of it. The London-based Argentinian artist (b. 1978) works primarily with sculpture, photography, film, and installation, adopting a conceptual approach marked by wit and a sense of play. Perception, time, memory, and a sense of how particular gestures read in different cultural contexts are central to Pica's work, alternately highlighting moments of connection and disjunction. The promise - as well as the uncertainty - of communication is a persistent concern in Pica's oeuvre. Megaphones, antennae, podiums, and signal flags are recurring motifs, though rarely are these devices shown in a moment of use. Depicted at rest or disconnected from their functionality, they become figures for potential communication, carriers of a message that always remains hypothetical.",

"description":"William Faulkner is one of the most important novelists in the American tradition, and his work represents an endlessly generative confluence of cultural, historical, and literary frictions. Faulkner\u2019s writing is famous for its poetic density and beauty, but his process and the editorial history of his work present layers of interpretive complication and depth that remain under-examined by scholars. This exhibit highlights some of the fascinating and meaningful discrepancies evident from Faulkner\u2019s manuscripts to his publisher\u2019s galleys and between various print editions of his most famous novels.\r\n\r\nItems are from the Irwin T. and Shirley Holtzman Collection of William Faulkner, which is a comprehensive collection of published Faulkner materials. Many first editions of books and short stories will be on display as well as original University of Mississippi yearbook illustrations, and reproductions of manuscripts. The exhibit focuses on the complex editorial history of Faulkner's work, including his approach to revision (including alterations he made to his stories and characters between different forms of publication and different editions). Materials range in date from 1917-1969.\r\n\r\nView the exhibit during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri., 10am-5pm.",

"description":"Sponsored by the Education Policy Initiative (EPI) at the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP). \r\n EPI is a program of coordinated activities designed to bring the latest academic knowledge to issues of education policy.\r\nGenerous support provided by Charles H. and Susan Gessner. \r\n\r\nAbstract\r\nThe U.S. high school graduation rate rose markedly during the first 70 years of the 20th century. This contributed to the human capital development that fueled economic growth and increases in standards of living. Since 1970, the U.S. high school graduation rate has stagnated, while those of other industrialized nations have risen. Do the patterns differ by gender, race, or ethnicity? Why should we care about these trends and patterns? Why did they occur? What is the evidence on strategies that are effective in increasing the high school graduation rate and the skills of American students?. This talk addresses these questions, using evidence from several national and state data sets.\r\n\r\nRichard Murnane, an economist, is Thompson Professor of Education and Society at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In recent years he has pursued three lines of research. With MIT Professors Frank Levy and David Autor, he has examined how computer-based technological change has affected skill demands in the U.S. economy. Murnane and Levy have written two books on this topic. The second line of research examines how increases in family income inequality in the U.S. have influenced educational opportunities for children from low-income families. Murnane and Greg Duncan have co-edited a volume describing four years of research on this topic. The volume, Whither Opportunity: Rising Inequality, Schools, and Children's Life Chances , will be published in September 2011. The third area of research examines the consequences of particular initiatives designed to improve the performance of the education sector. For example, along with HGSE colleagues, Murnane has examined the consequences of providing salary bonuses to attract skilled teachers to high need schools and the impact that exit examination requirements have on the probability that economically disadvantaged students graduate from high school. Murnane and his colleague, John Willett, recently published a book Methods Matter: Improving Causal Inference in Educational and Social Science Research (Oxford U. Press, 2011).\r\n",

"description":"While the contemporary Chinese woodblock prints in the Multiple Impressions exhibition represent the latest developments in the long history of the printed image in China, a different type of woodblock print was produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in commercial workshops for the mass market. These prints depicted a wide range of subjects, including protective guardians, auspicious images, tutelary household gods, Buddhist and Taoist deities, illustrations of stories from history, literature, and opera, and scenes of everyday life, as well as moral lessons and didactic narratives. Some were posted in houses at the time of the New Year; others were the focus of ceremonies performed at different times throughout the year. This talk by noted scholar Ellen Johnston Laing will draw on examples from UMMA\u2019s and other museum collections to take a look at the subjects depicted in popular prints, their visual and artistic characteristics, their physical contexts, and the traditional ceremonies associated with them. \r\n",

"description":"Michigan audiences may know cellist Ben Sollee from his work with Abigail Washburn's Sparrow Quartet, but now he's stepping out on his own with wildly original music that doesn't fit into any genre. Classically trained, he draws on Appalachian, chamber pop, jazz, blues, and traditional songwriter folk music. What ties it all together is intensity! \"I never expect to see that cello in one piece after Ben gets done playing it,\u201d\u009d says My Morning Jacket frontman Yim Yames. \u201cHe bows and beats and works it over with a passionate fury rarely seen. Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2013he can play it and hold his own with the most schooled and delicate scholars out there, but more importantly, Ben makes it live.\" He comes to The Ark with an acclaimed new album, \"Inclusions.\"",
