Cartoons as a weapon. Ben Yomen used cartoons to fight bosses he felt had no respect for their laborers and to ridicule an American Congress he felt had no respect for its constituents. Many of his cartoons that were published in the 1940s have such a timeless message that they could have been published in 2011.

In a 1943 Federated Press survey, Yoman was voted "most popular cartoonist in the labor press today" by AFL (American Federation of Labor), CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) and Railroad Brotherhood editors. His cartoons documented the labor struggles of the day.

This collection of Ben Yoman cartoons is part of the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the U-M Special Collections Library. The Labadie Collection is the oldest research collection of radical history in the United States, documenting a wide variety of international social protest movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is named for anarchist and labor organizer Joseph Antoine Labadie (1850-1933).
William Faulkner is one of the most important novelists in the American tradition, and his work represents an endlessly generative confluence of cultural, historical, and literary frictions. Faulkner’s writing is famous for its poetic density and beauty, but his process and the editorial history of his work present layers of interpretive complication and depth that remain under-examined by scholars. This exhibit highlights some of the fascinating and meaningful discrepancies evident from Faulkner’s manuscripts to his publisher’s galleys and between various print editions of his most famous novels.

Items are from the Irwin T. and Shirley Holtzman Collection of William Faulkner, which is a comprehensive collection of published Faulkner materials. Many first editions of books and short stories will be on display as well as original University of Mississippi yearbook illustrations, and reproductions of manuscripts. The exhibit focuses on the complex editorial history of Faulkner's work, including his approach to revision (including alterations he made to his stories and characters between different forms of publication and different editions). Materials range in date from 1917-1969.

View the exhibit during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri., 10am-5pm.",

In the ten years following graduation from the University of Michigan in 1993, he racked up 14,000 hours of “recreational” game time. He held down a job, but spent most of his free time in front of a computer screen. Support and intervention from friends finally got him to control his cyber behaviors.

Kevin Roberts draws on personal and professional experiences with cyber addictions to take audiences deep into the world of the cyber addict, examining the issues that underlie compulsive urges. Discussed are warning signs, tools to deal with this addiction, and strategies to ensure that the problem does not take root in the first place, especially with those with AD/HD who are at particularly high risk.

Kevin Roberts is currently an AD/HD coach, director of curriculum for the EmpowerADD Project, and a leader of support groups for those with cyber addictions. His clients include professional athletes, college professors, and teenagers. One of his cyber group members, an excessive texter, will be featured later this fall on MTV’s show, True Life.
",

Che (Benjamin Bratt) is out of prison and on the straight and narrow. Still, every day is a struggle as he battles alcoholism and drives a bus in order to support his family. When the workday is done, Che and his friends, the "Mission Boyz," pass the time by restoring junked cars to mint condition. Feared by his peers yet deeply respected as the toughest Chicano on the block, Che is the kind of guy whose entire existence is defined by his macho reputation. There's no one in the world that Che loves more than his adolescent son, Jesse (Jeremy Ray Valdez), but both father and son are about to discover that love isn't exactly unconditional. Upon discovering that Jesse has been living a secret life, Che flies into a violent rage, assaulting the boy and kicking him out onto the street. Meanwhile, Che's attractive and headstrong neighbor Lena (Erika Alexander) challenges the ultra-macho gearhead to step back for a minute and take stock of the life he thought he had. ~ Jason Buchanan,"
",

The book has been praised particularly for shedding light on the surprising U.S.-Iran relationship during the Nixon and Ford administrations.

As uprisings today rock the Muslim world, with America at war across the region, Andrew Cooper transports us back to the decade where it all began.
The latest sounds blowing in from Detroit are from the Detroit Tenors, led by saxophonists Carl Cafagna and Steve Wood. The band is a tribute to the great tenor sax pairings of the 40s and 50s such as Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray, Johnny Griffin/Lockjaw Davis, and Al Cohn/Zoot Sims. The Detroit Tenors takes this tradition into the modern era with arrangements from the "tenor-centric" bands of Elvin Jones and compositions by such contemporary players as George Coleman and George Garzone.

Cafagna and Wood are mainstays of the Detroit jazz scene and have performed with a "who's who" of local and international greats, including Marcus Belgrave, Roy Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, Richie Cole, Mose Allison, the Clayton Brothers, and Hot Club of Detroit. With the addition of the explosive rhythm team of Gwinnell, Keller, and Dobbins, you've got a chemistry that guarantees musical fireworks!",

She's mighty good." Here's a young artist who connects with the roots of country, blues and rock without losing herself or descending into mannerism.
