In “Waiting for the Extraordinary,” a new site-specific installation commissioned by the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery, Dion focuses his enquiry on Michigan Chief Justice Augustus Woodward’s territorial act of 1817, establishing a “Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania.” Woodward harbored a dream of classifying all human knowledge and had discussed this with his friend and mentor Thomas Jefferson. His plan would remain a blueprint for the university until 1872, when Henry Tappan became its first appointed president and instituted a German model of education more in line with the U-M we know today.

Woodward’s handwritten list from the period outlined thirteen different professorships, or “diaadaxiim,” which followed an idiosyncratic system of classifications. He invented outlandish words for these, mixing Greek and Latin, resulting in alliterative designations such as Anthropoglossica (Literature), Physiosophica (Natural Philosophy), and Latrica (Medicine), to name a few.

For the Institute for the Humanities project, Mark Dion imagines what objects would best represent these classifications and sets out to find them in the many departments and collections within the university. As he embarks upon this ambitious and idealistic quest, the result is as much an expedition as a scavenger hunt, in part Aristotle as well as Don Quixote. In a week’s time, he locates a magpie, a meteorite, a celestial globe, a flask, a bugle, and then a heart.

Each artifact is reproduced using 3D rapid imaging technology at the U-M Duderstadt Center, coated with phosphorescent paint, and then exhibited in a manner suggestive of post-nuclear hallowed halls.

But first, visitors to the gallery take a number, are seated in a waiting room, a carbon copy in itself. It is the familiar experience encountered in every institution, at the dentist’s office, or the DMV. We are waiting, just waiting”¦for the extraordinary.

Mark Dion’s work considers scientific method and museum practice and their influence on our understanding of history, the natural world, and what we know to be true. His work questions the hard line between rational thought and unadulterated subjectivity. Although conceptual, Dion’s projects serve as formal critiques, examining the relationship between the human experience as we know it and the institutions, museums, and galleries that predetermine it.
William Faulkner is one of the most important novelists in the American tradition, and his work represents an endlessly generative confluence of cultural, historical, and literary frictions. Faulkner’s writing is famous for its poetic density and beauty, but his process and the editorial history of his work present layers of interpretive complication and depth that remain under-examined by scholars. This exhibit highlights some of the fascinating and meaningful discrepancies evident from Faulkner’s manuscripts to his publisher’s galleys and between various print editions of his most famous novels.

Items are from the Irwin T. and Shirley Holtzman Collection of William Faulkner, which is a comprehensive collection of published Faulkner materials. Many first editions of books and short stories will be on display as well as original University of Mississippi yearbook illustrations, and reproductions of manuscripts. The exhibit focuses on the complex editorial history of Faulkner's work, including his approach to revision (including alterations he made to his stories and characters between different forms of publication and different editions). Materials range in date from 1917-1969.

View the exhibit during Special Collections Library hours: Mon-Fri., 10am-5pm.
University of Michigan Dearborn’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance is bringing Gene
Robinson, the first openly gay priest ordained in a major Christian denomination, to
speak at the University of Michigan's Dearborn campus on October 5. Following the
bishop’s afternoon speech and discussion, Robinson will attend the student organization’s
evening reception to raise money for the LGBT youth shelter Ruth Ellis Center.

Robinson is the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church of the U.S, which is one of the most progressive major Christian denominations in the country. The church has backed legislation to protect LGBTs and allows gays and lesbians to be ordained ministry.

Bishop Robinson entered office in March 2004. That November, Bishop Robinson was consecrated as the Bishop of New Hampshire - and as the first openly gay bishop in LGBT history. He wore a bulletproof vest under his clothing at the ceremony.

Since then, Robinson's career has hit many highs and lows. He was the only bishop in the Anglican Communion not to be invited to the 15th decennial Lambeth Conference in November 2008. One month later, Robinson was asked to lead the opening prayer at President Obama's Inaugural Celebration.

In 2010 at the annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire in Concord, Bishop Robinson announced that he would step down in January of 2013. He will be 65.

Bishop Robinson will speak Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the BorgWarner Auditorium of the Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems Building. The reception will begin that evening at 6 p.m. in the University Center’s Kocchoff Hall. Hors d’oeurves and refreshments will be served following a brief speech from a representative of the university’s GSA and a few words from the bishop. Bishop Robinson will remain at the reception to personally meet attendants who wish to speak with him.

A $20 suggested donation is asked for at the door of the reception, all of which will be donated to the Ruth Ellis Center to support the number of services they offer to the LGBT youth of the metro Detroit area. Silent auction items will also be presented around the reception, the proceeds of which will also benefit the REC.

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet one of the nation’s most important gay leaders, and
benefit local efforts to assist homeless LGBT children and teens in the process. For more
information keep tabs on Pridesource.com and umdgsa.weebly.com or call Benjamin Jenkins, Event Coordinator at 734-776-8104. A copy of the event’s flyer is currently
being designed.
When songstress Priscilla Ahn graduated from high school in Pennsylvania, she packed her guitar and headed for Los Angeles. After a period of waitressing and writing jaded songs, she began to attract notice with her angelic voice and for the diverse array of instruments (including kazoo) she played in concert. Priscilla landed a backup-vocal slot with Amos Lee and then an opening-act tour with Joshua Radin. Signed to the venerable Blue Note label, she released her breakthrough album, "A Good Day," which drew equally and freely on folk, country, and pop. Growth emerges as the central theme of Priscilla Ahn’s sophomore album "When You Grow Up," a 12-song set, recorded in England, that announces Priscilla's long-range ambitions an artist and a songwriter. She wrote or co-wrote all but one of the album’s songs, threading a loose storyline through life’s ups and downs, her angelic voice narrating the experiences through which we grow.",
