His plan would remain a blueprint for the university until 1872, when Henry Tappan became its first appointed president and instituted a German model of education more in line with the U-M we know today.\r\n\r\nWoodward\u2019s handwritten list from the period outlined thirteen different professorships, or \u201cdiaadaxiim,\u201d\u009d which followed an idiosyncratic system of classifications. He invented outlandish words for these, mixing Greek and Latin, resulting in alliterative designations such as Anthropoglossica (Literature), Physiosophica (Natural Philosophy), and Latrica (Medicine), to name a few.\r\n\r\nFor the Institute for the Humanities project, Mark Dion imagines what objects would best represent these classifications and sets out to find them in the many departments and collections within the university. As he embarks upon this ambitious and idealistic quest, the result is as much an expedition as a scavenger hunt, in part Aristotle as well as Don Quixote. In a week\u2019s time, he locates a magpie, a meteorite, a celestial globe, a flask, a bugle, and then a heart. \r\n\r\nEach artifact is reproduced using 3D rapid imaging technology at the U-M Duderstadt Center, coated with phosphorescent paint, and then exhibited in a manner suggestive of post-nuclear hallowed halls.\r\n\r\nBut first, visitors to the gallery take a number, are seated in a waiting room, a carbon copy in itself. It is the familiar experience encountered in every institution, at the dentist\u2019s office, or the DMV. We are waiting, just waiting\u201d\u00a6for the extraordinary.\r\n\r\nMark Dion\u2019s work considers scientific method and museum practice and their influence on our understanding of history, the natural world, and what we know to be true. His work questions the hard line between rational thought and unadulterated subjectivity. These Parties have qualified for their position on scientific grounds. The presentation will examine both the scientific and political outputs of all the Consultative Parties over the last 20 years and demonstrate that a small number of original Parties not only provide most of the science but also set the political agenda for the continent. Generally those countries producing the most science papers have the greatest political output as well. None of the most recent signatories to the Treaty appear to play a major role in managing Antarctica. The Treaty prides itself on its scientific credentials, but while nations have to demonstrate a substantial science programme to gain consultative status, there is no process to review science quality or commitment thereafter. The presentation will conclude by highlighting the reputational risk of this policy lacuna and will suggest a way in which it could be addressed. \r\n\r\n\r\nJohn Dudeney has 45 years of professional experience and a lifelong passion in matters relating to the Antarctic. He joined the British Antarctic Survey in 1966 as an ionospheric physicist and wintered at Faraday (now Vernadsky) Station on the Antarctic Peninsula in 1967 and 1968 (base commander in 1968). He then worked for BAS in a variety of roles: research scientist, research leader, science manager, head of science division and latterly (until retirement in early 2006), as Deputy Director. He has visited Antarctica 23 times in all. His experience encompasses field work, science research, science leadership, logistics operations and crisis management, policy making and management at senior level, health & safety policy, and international governance of the Antarctic. Among many external responsibilities, He was chief officer responsible for solar terrestrial and astronomical research for the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research from 1992 to 1994. He served as the UK representative to the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) and a member of the UK delegation to the Antarctic Treaty from 1999 to 2005. He was recipient of the Polar Medal in 1976 and clasp to the polar medal in 1995.
